Softball Team Opens Spring Trip with Wins; Helixon Earns 200th Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team opened its 2014 spring trip schedule with a pair of victories Monday in the Tucson Invitational Games. The Eagles earned a 6-2 win over fourth-ranked Central College (Iowa) followed by a 10-2 win in five innings over Marian College (Wis.). UW-L improves to 6-0 on the season.

With the two victories, UW-L's head coach Chris Helixon earned his 200th career win at the helm of the Eagles. He is now 200-132 (.602) in his ninth season at UW-L. Helixon has led UW-L to three appearances in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament and two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament titles. The Eagles won their first league title in school history in 2010 with a 16-0 conference mark.

In Monday's win over Central (Iowa), UW-L scored five runs in the top of the first inning.  Megan Nelson's two-out double scored Lindsey Sheehan and Emily Holldorf to make it 2-0. Emilie Wiltzius followed with a double to score Nelson and Mary Kate Pryor's two-out single scored Kelli Anderson and Wiltzius.  All five runs were unearned.

The Eagles added a run in the top of the third on a Wiltzius single to knock in Nelson.

Central, ranked fourth on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third on Jordan Overland's groundout to score Shannon Coulson.

The Dutch made it 6-2 in the sixth inning as Whitney Sowers scored on Karlee Rock's RBI single.

Nelson (3-0) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and one walk with two strikeouts. She was also 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.

Wiltzius finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.  Pryor also had two RBI.

Versus Marian (Wis.), the Sabres took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles from Emily Gorges and Lydia Cloud.

UW-L scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 advantage.  Wiltzius cut the lead to 2-1 with an RBI single to knock in Anderson while Kallie Krech's double to score Wiltzius tied the game.  Holldorf gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead on an RBI groundout to score Pryor.

The Eagles added two runs in the fourth and tallied five in the fifth. Alecia Faber's double scored Krech and Katie Fink's single scored Faber in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.  Krech had a bunt single for an RBI in the fifth while Holldorf added a two-run single and Fink had an RBI after a Marian error.

Heather Grelle (3-0) picked up the win for UW-L, going 4.0 innings, allowing nine hits and two runs with one walk and one strikeout.

Pryor finished 3-for-3 with two runs while Krech was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.  Wiltzius and Anderson both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored with Wiltzius adding an RBI.   Holldorf had three RBI and Fink two.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, March 18 with a pair of games.  The Eagles face Crown College (Minn.) at 11 a.m. (Central) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College (Calif.) at 1 p.m. (Central).
