Softball Team Earns Doubleheader Sweep over Northwestern

Megan Nelson earned the win in the opener Saturday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) Saturday afternoon at Augsburg College's Edor Nelson Field.  UW-L took the opener, 11-2 in five innings and the nightcap, 9-2, to improve to 4-0 on the season.  Northwestern (Minn.) fell to 1-3 on the year.

UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Lindsey Sheehan scored on Mary Kate Pryor's RBI double.  The Eagles added two more runs in the third inning on Kelli Anderson's sacrifice bunt to score Emily Holldorf and Megan Nelson's RBI single to score Alecia Faber.

UW-L tallied seven times in the top of the fourth to lead 10-0.  Nelson and Emilie Wiltzius each had two-run singles for the Eagles.

Northwestern got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Kelsey Stoltman's double to knock in Ann Lokke.  Nelson had her fourth RBI of the game in the top of the fifth to score Katie Fink.  Northwestern finished the scoring in the bottom of the fifth on Lokke's run-scoring single.

Nelson (2-0) earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits, one run and one walk with three strikeouts.  She was also 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored.  Holldorf, Faber, Fink and Sheehan each had two hits and scored twice as the Eagles finished with 15 hits in the game.

In the nightcap, Northwestern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Megan Threlkeld scored on Jennifer Ankrom's single.  UW-L came right back in the bottom half of the frame with six runs.  Fink gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead on a two-run single.  Pryor later drew a bases-loaded walk while Kallie Krech hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI and Holldorf doubled in a run.

Northwestern cut the lead to 6-2 in the second inning on Erin Kleinjan's solo home run, but UW-L took a 8-2 lead in the bottom of the inning as Nelson had an RBI double and later scored on a throwing error.  The Eagles finished the scoring in the third inning on Fink's single to knock in Greta Gumness.

Heather Grelle (2-0) picked up the win, going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs with three strikeouts.  Jessie Carignan recorded her first save of the season, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits while striking out four.

Fink finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI while Gumness was 2-for-4 with two runs. Nelson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

UW-L returns to action Monday, March 17 versus Central College (Iowa) in Tucson, Arizona.
