Women's Basketball Earns Win over UW-River Falls

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 64-53 victory over UW-River Falls Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles improve to 10-11 overall and 4-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons drop to 4-16 overall and 3-9 in the conference.  UW-L snapped a six-game losing streak to UW-River Falls with the victory.

UW-L never trailed in Wednesday's win, scoring the first 13 points of the game.  UW-River Falls got on the scoreboard with 12:03 left in the opening half as Cassy Saxton hit one-of-two free throws. The Falcons missed their first five shots from the field and had 13 turnovers before Saxton's free throw. 

Kate Theisen scored on a layup for UW-River Falls with 11:23 left to cut UW-L's lead to 13-3.  UW-L then went on an 11-2 run to lead 24-5 with 7:34 remaining.  The Eagles led by as many 23 points in the first half at 30-7 with 5:10 left before the Falcons finished the half on a 11-4 run to cut UW-L's halftime lead to 34-18.

UW-L led by as many as 25 points in the second half.  UW-River Falls would get no closer than the final score of 64-53 on a three-point field goal from Josie Hayes at the end of regulation.  

UW-L shot 38.2% from the field, including 26.7% (four-of-15) from three-point range, and 66.7% (18-of-27) at the free throw line.  

Rachel Atchison lead the Eagles with 16 points, finishing five-of-10 from the field, including four-of-seven from three-point range, and two-of-two at the free throw line.  Jenna Anderson added 11 points for UW-L, finishing five-of-nine from the field and one-of-one at the line.  She also had a team-high four steals. MaKenzie Miller finished with a team-high six rebounds while scoring six points.  

UW-River Falls shot 25.0% from the field, including 23.8% (five-of-21) from three-point range, and 78.3% (18-of-23) from the line.  

Tess Lueders lead the Falcons with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals.  

UW-L returns to action Saturday, February 8 at UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
