Box Score 2 Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team opened its 2014 season with a doubleheader sweep at Augsburg College (Minn.) Friday night at Edor Nelson Field. The Eagles took the opener, 8-0 in five innings, and the nightcap, 6-1. The Auggies were also playing their first games of the season.
In the opener, UW-L scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
Emily Holldorf and
Alecia Faber both reachced on Augsburg errors.
Katie Fink then hit a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. After a groundout,
Kelli Anderson singled to score Holldorf and Faber scored on a throw to make it 2-0.
The Eagles added three runs in the third inning as
Megan Nelson had a bunt single for an RBI to make it 3-0 followed by a
Emilie Wiltzius single to score a run.
Mary Kate Pryor doubled with two outs to score Nelson for a 5-0 advantage.
UW-L tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Anderson having a two-run single and Wiltzius an RBI single.
The game ended after the top of the fifth due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Nelson (1-0) earned the win in the opener, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven.
Anderson was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Wiltzius finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Holldorf also scroed twice.
In the nightcap, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of third as
Katrina O'Keefe scored on Fink's bunt single. The Auggies tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth on Lauren Torberg's RBI groundout to score Lindsay Helbach.
UW-L scored twice in the fifth on Fink's two-out double scoring O'Keefe and Holldorf to make it 3-1. The Eagles added three runs runs in the seventh on Fink's RBI single,
Lindsey Sheehan's RBI bunt single and Nelson's run-scoring single.
Heather Grelle (1-0) picked up the win for UW-L in the nightcap, going 6.1 innings, allowing three hits, one run and two walks with two strikeouts.
Jessie Carignan struck out both hitters she faced to end the game.
Fink was 3-for-4 with four RBI while Nelson finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Holldorf scored twice.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, March 1 versus the University of Northwestern (Minn.). The teams will play a doubleheader in Minneapolis starting at 10 a.m.
