Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team fell 22-14 at Luther College (Iowa) Wednesday night in a battle of ranked teams in the Regents Center. UW-L, ranked sixth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), falls to 5-1 overall while 13th-ranked Luther (Iowa) improves to 2-1.
Luther (Iowa) had lost the previous eight meetings against UW-L.
UW-L's
Ryan Weinmann won a major decision (15-2) over Angelo San Juan at 125-pounds to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead to open the match.
Dustin Weinmann extended the lead to 7-0 with a win by decision (6-4) over the Norse' Evan Obert at 133-pounds in a battle of ranked wrestlers. Weinmann is currently 10th in the NWCA while Obert is sixth at 133-pounds.
Luther's (Iowa) Drew Van Anrooy, ranked second at 141-pounds, won by forfeit to close the gap to 7-6.
At 149-pounds, another battle or ranked wrestlers went in the favor of the Eagles.
Kasey Einerson, ranked fourth, won by decision (9-4) over ninth-ranked Dakota Gray to put UW-L up 10-6.
Luther (Iowa) won the next four matches to take a 19-10 lead.
Reed Van Anrooy won by major decision (11-3) at 157-pounds over UW-L's
Derek Weinmann to tie the match at 10-10. At 165-pounds, Luther's (Iowa) Blake Letney won by decision (7-3) over sixth-ranked
Tyler Schneider to give the Norse the lead for the first time at 13-10. Justin Kreiter kept the momentum going for Luther (Iowa), defeating UW-L's
Thurston Schuster by decision (8-6) at 174-pounds to extend the lead to 16-10. At 184-pounds, Luther's (Iowa) third-ranked Jayden DeVilbiss won by decision (9-2) over
Richard Carlson, and the Norse led 19-10.
Sixth-ranked
Eric Twohey broke the momentum, giving the Eagles the win at 197-pounds by major decision (17-5) over Derek Stork to cut the lead to 19-14.
Luther (Iowa) earned the dual victory with a win by decision (3-1 in overtime) at 285-pounds as Conner Herman defeated
Cody Endres.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, December 21 at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Duals. The Eagles will compete in three duals, including versus Pacific University (Ore.), Buena Vista University (Iowa) and Coe College (Iowa).
