Box Score River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team fell 16-13 in overtime at UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field. The Eagles drop to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons improve ot 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
It is the fourth time since 2009 that UW-L and UW-River Falls have played overtime. The Eagles earned a 24-21 double overtime victory last season in La Crosse and 49-47 in River Falls in double overtime in 2009. UW-River Falls earned a 28-21 overtime win in 2011 in La Crosse. UW-L is now 8-7 all-time in overtime contests.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff and drove to the Falcons' 15-yard line, but
Ben Hertrampf was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-one. UW-River Falls took a 3-0 lead with 11:49 remaining in the second quarter as Ryan Kusilek hit a 23-yard field goal. The Falcons went 19 yards on seven plays and 3:42. The drive was set-up after
Matthew Salerno's 20-yard punt.
UW-River Falls, which earned its second win in the last 22 meetings with UW-L, turned the ball over on Rance Ashley's fumble with 9:19 left in the first half with
Reese Felton forcing and
Tyler Hyde recovering for UW-L. The Eagles drove 28 yards on nine plays and 4:28 with
Eric Wittkowske recording a 23-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining in the second quarter to force a 3-3 tie.
The Falcons took the ensuing kickoff and led 10-3 with 1:29 remaining in the first half as Ashley scored on a three-yard run. UW-River Falls went 75 yards on eight plays and 3:22. Nick Zimmerman had a 47-yard run on the drive. The Falcons led 10-3 at halftime.
UW-L tied the game at 10-10 with 1:37 left in the third quarter as
John Tackett scored on an eight-yard run. The Eagles went 73 yards on 13 plays and 4:26. UW-L took its first lead of the game with 12:24 remaining as Wittkowske hit a 39-yard field. The drive went 29 yards on eight plays and 3:33.
Using an 18-play, 58-yard drive in 8:37, UW-River Falls tied the game at 13-13 with 3:47 left as Kusilek recorded a 31-yard field goal. UW-L took over on the final drive of regulation from its own 25-yard line with 3:47 remaining. The Eagles drove to the Falcons' 32-yard line with :04 left, but Wittkowske's 50-yard field goal was blocked by Jason Caballero on the final play of regulation.
UW-L won the overtime toss with UW-River Falls going on offense first. The Falcons drive was stalled at the Eagles' 20-yard line, but Kusilek made a 38-yard field goal to give UW-River Falls a 16-13 advantage. Hertrampf rushed for nine yards on UW-L's first two plays of overtime, but Tackett was stopped for no gain on third-and-one. Wittkowske's 33-yard field goal was blocked on the final play of the game.
UW-L finished with 295 yards of offense Saturday, including 229 rushing and 66 passing. The Eagles were six-of-15 on third-down and missed on their only fourth-down attempt. UW-L won the time of possession, 30:17 to 29:43.
Hertrampf finished with 148 yards rushing on 32 carries (4.6 average) while Tackett went six-of-18 passing for 64 yards.
Andrew Thompson was one-of-three for two yards while being sacked once.
Joel Oxton caught htree passes for 30 yards while
Chris Stackhouse (22 yards) and
Tommy Young (14) each had two catches.
UW-River Falls finished with 245 yards, including 164 rushing and 81 passing. The Falcons were five-of-15 on third-down and converted both of their fourth-down attempts.
Zimmerman led UW-River Falls with 91 yards rushing on 14 attempts (6.5 average) while Ashley totaled 47 yards on 16 carries (2.9 average). Kusilek was 10-of-17 passing for 81 yards. He was sacked once. Jake Ryan (28 yards) and Jordan Christianson (23 yards) each had three catches.
Shane Rockweiler led UW-L's defense with 10 unassisted tackles and pass break-up while
Michael Garvey finished with six unassisted tackles, including 1.0 for loss.
Reese Felton and
Zackary Kleven each had five unassisted tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss. Felton also recorded a forced fumble while Kleven had 1.0 quarterback sack. Hyde (fumble recovery) and
Noah Risch also had five unassisted tackles.
Zach Loos led UW-River Falls with nine unassisted tackles while recording 1.0 tackle for loss and 1.0 quarterback sack. Tyler Ledbeter had seven unassisted tackles and two pass break-ups.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 8 hosting 16th-ranked UW-Platteville at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day/Veteran's Day in the Eagles' home finale.
