Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-2 (14-25, 25-21, 27-25, 18-25, 8-15) at city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) Saturday afternoon in R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium. The Eagles drop to 5-8 on the season while the V-Hawks, ranked 24th on this week's National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), improve to 19-5 on the season.
The opening set was tied 12-12 when Viterbo went on a 10-0 run to lead 22-12. UW-L raced out to a 7-2 and 8-3 lead in the second set before Viterbo came back to cut the lead to 14-12. The Eagles then scored four of the next five points to lead 18-13, but the V-Hawks came back to force a 21-21 tie. UW-L scored the final four points, including the winning point on a
Lauren Probst kill.
The third set was tied 16-16 when UW-L scored three straight points. Viterbo tied the set at 21-21 on a Brianna Brinkman block. The V-Hawks led 25-24, but Probst tied the set with a kill.
Kayla Ashland and
Leah Putzier then hit back-to-back kills to give UW-L the 27-25 win.
Viterbo took an early 10-5 lead in the fourth set. UW-L later cut the lead to 13-8, but Viterbo went on a 8-2 run to lead 21-10. The V-Hawks went on to win the set, 25-18.
The V-Hawks raced out to leads of 6-0 and 8-1 in the fifth and deciding set. The Eagles could get no closer than 9-4.
Probst led UW-L with 19 kills while Ashland finished with 10. Probst hit .267 (19 kills, seven errors, 45 attempts) while Ashland hit .391 (10-1-23).
Cassie Raduka finished with 44 assists as the Eagles hit .118.
Courtney Geisler had a team-high 19 digs while Probst and Raduka each recorded double-doubles. Probst had 14 digs while Raduka finished with 11.
Danica Johnson also had 11 digs.
Alicia Olson led Viterbo with 24 kills while hitting .383 (24-6-47). Erica Willadsen had 12 kills and Lynette Benson 11. Brinkman recorded 49 assists as the V-Hawks hit .214.
Jennifer Krentz registered 28 digs while Mandi Baumeister finished with 16 and Jess Jerde 12.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, October 2 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
