Baseball Team Falls to Nationally Ranked UW-Stevens Point

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader to 23rd-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Pointers, ranked 23rd on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 5-1, and the nightcap, 10-1. UW-L falls to 16-17 overall and 8-11 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point improves to 28-8 overall and 15-5 in the conference.

In the opener, the Pointers scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Sean Gerber singled up the middle in the first to score Dan Douglas while Clint Rose hit an RBI double in the second to knock in Casey Barnes.

UW-L cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Brooks Braga singled with out and scored on Adam Cordova's double.

UW-Stevens Point increased its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning on Ryan Schilter's two-run home run, scoring Douglas. The Pointers finished the scoring in the sixth as Bobby Gregorich scored on a passed ball.

Tim Verthein (2-6) suffered the complete-game loss for UW-L. He went 9.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks while striking out seven.

Braga finished 2-for-4 with a run scored while Cordova was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI.

Jacob Herbst (8-1) earned the complete-game win, pitching 9.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run and one walk while striking out four.

Douglas, Schilter, Gerber and Rose each had two hits for the Pointers.

In the nightcap, UW-Stevens Point scored five runs in the third. Barnes made it 1-0 with a run-scoring single while Riley Spetz drew a bases-loaded walk for a 2-0 lead and Brandon Kranz hit a three-run double for a 5-0 lead.

UW-L scored its run in the bottom of the sixth as Braga scored on Nic Barnes' single.

The Pointers added four runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth.

Kevin Johnson (5-2) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, nine runs (five earned) and four walks with three strikeouts.

Morgan finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Ben Messenger (3-0) earned the win for the Pointers, going 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, one run and two walks with two strikeouts.

Kranz was 3-for-4 with four RBI whle Schilter finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Douglas had two hits while Gerber and Barnes each scored twice.

The teams will play another twinbill Sunday, May 5 at noon at North Campus Field.
