Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 6-5 to 19th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon in the title game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament being played at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at Miller Stadium. The Eagles wrap up their regular season at 21-21 while the Pointers improve to 35-9. With the win, UW-Stevens Point earns the WIAC's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament. The national tournament field will be announced Monday.
The Eagles, the defending WIAC champion and the fourth seed in this weekend's tournament, advanced to Sunday's championship game after a pair of wins earlier in the day. UW-L defeated third-ranked and top-seeded UW-Whitewater by the score of 12-2 in seven innings in its first game and then 2-1 over UW-Stevens Point setting up the second championship game.
UW-Stevens Point advanced to Sunday's championship with a 6-3 victory over UW-L Saturday night.
In Sunday's second championship game, the Pointers raced out to a 6-0 lead. UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the top of the third inning. Brandon Kranz singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Clint Rose then walked followed by a Dan Douglas single. Douglas advanced to second on a UW-L throwing error on the single with Rose advancing to third and Kranz scoring the first run of the contest. Ryan Schilter then hit an infield single to score Rose for a 2-0 lead.
UW-Stevens Point added four runs on two hits in the top of the fourth to take its 6-0 lead. Casey Barnes singled to score Jimmy Coady to make it 3-0 and Kranz followed with a three-run home run.
UW-L cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth on
Brooks Braga's solo home run. The Eagles tallied four runs on two hits and two Pointers' errors in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Trevor Burmeister opened the fifth reaching on a fielding error.
Brett Jacobson followed with a single to put runners on first and second.
Josh Rowles then reached on another UW-Stevens Point fielding error as Burmeister moved to third and Jacobson to second to load the bases.
Cole Cefalu then hit a grand slam to right field to make it a one-run game.
The Eagles left two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to score.
Mark Kowalke (1-6) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 3.1 innings. He allowed four hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks with three strikeouts.
Travis Kruckow went 0.2 of an inning, allowing one hit, one run and one walk while
Troy Kenkel pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.
Skyler Debilzen, who earned the save in the 2-1 victory over the Pointers earlier in the day, pitched the final 2.0 innings. He allowed one hit with one strikeout.
Seven different players had a hit for the Eagles.
Brad Stroik (5-0) picked up the win for UW-Stevens Point. He went 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts. Tyler Flood earned his second save, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
Kranz was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
