Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 2-1 victory over 19th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium. The Eagles, the fourth seed for the tournament, and the Pointers, the second seed, will play each other starting at 4 p.m. Sunday for the tournament championship. The winner earns the league's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament.
UW-L earned a 12-2 victory (7 innings) over third-ranked and top-seeded UW-Whitewater Sunday morning to advance versus UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers had advanced to the title game with a 6-3 win over the Eagles Saturday night.
With Sunday's victory, the Eagles earned their second all-time win (2-8) versus the Pointers in the WIAC Tournament. UW-L last defeated UW-Stevens Point in the 2000 WIAC Tournament by the score 6-2 in the title game.
UW-L and UW-Stevens Point were scoreless until the top of the sixth Sunday. The Eagles'
Brooks Braga opened the frame with a single and advanced to third on
Adam Cordova's double down the right field line. Garett Novinski then knocked in Braga with a sacrifice bunt for the first run of the game.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the seventh.
Cole Cefalu singled with two outs and moved to second on a balk. He then scored on
Alex Cordova's RBI double to right center field.
UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Casey Barnes doubled to start the inning and one out later advanced to third on a passed ball as Clint Rose walked. Dan Douglas then reached on a fielder's choice with Barnes scoring.
The Pointers had the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but Douglas lined into an unassisted double play to
Alex Cordova to end the game.
Ben Cejka (2-1) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 8.1 innings. He allowed six hits, one run (unearned) and four walks with three strikeouts.
Skyler Debilzen earned his sixth save of the season, pitching 0.2 of an inning with one walk.
The Eagles finished with six hits in the game.
Alex Cordova went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Ben Messenger (4-1) took the loss for UW-Stevens Point, going 6.2 innings. He allowed six hits, two runs and one walk with five strikeouts.
The Pointers totaled six hits. Barnes was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
