UW-L Falls to UW-Stevens Point; Faces UW-Whitewater Sunday

Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 6-3 to UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium. The Eagles, the tournament's fourth seed, will face top-seeded UW-Whitewater in an elimination game Sunday, May 12 starting at 10 a.m. Second-seeded UW-Stevens Point advances to the championship game Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Pointers will take on the winner of the UW-L/UW-Whitewater contest. If UW-Stevens Point drops the game at 1 p.m., the two teams will face each other at 4 p.m. in the championship contest. The winner of the WIAC Tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament.

UW-L advanced to Saturday night's game after earning a 6-0 win over UW-Whitewater in the first game of the tournament earlier in the day. UW-Stevens Point advanced with a 10-8 win over third-seeded UW-Oshkosh. UW-Whitewater earned a 17-9 win over UW-Oshkosh in an elimination game Saturday.

UW-Stevens Point improves to 8-1 all-time versus UW-L in the WIAC Tournament. The teams were meeting for the first time since the 2006 league tournament in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.

The Pointers, now 34-8 overall, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first Saturday night. Sean Gerber reached on an Eagles' throwing error with two outs and stole second. He then scored on Jimmy Coady's RBI single to right field.

UW-Stevens Point scored four unearned runs with two outs in the top of the second to lead 5-0. Bobby Gregorich scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead and Clint Rose scored on a fielding error for a 3-0 advantage. Coady followed with a two-run single to give the Pointers a 5-0 lead.

UW-L, now 19-20 on the season, cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of third. Cole Cefalu drew a lead-off walk, but was forced out on Alex Cordova's fielder's choice. Cordova later stole second with two outs. Adam Cordova drew a walk to put runners on first and second followed by a run-scoring singles from Garrett Novinski and Ben Morgan.

The Pointers scored their sixth unearned run of the game in the top of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead as Ryan Schilter scored on an Eagles' fielding error.

The Eagles cut the lead to 6-3 with an unearned run of their own in the sixth inning. Brooks Braga doubled with two outs and scored as Adam Cordova reached on a UW-Stevens Point throwing error.

Joel Effertz (5-4) suffered the loss for UW-L. He pitched a complete-game, going 9.0 innings while allowing six hits, six runs (none earned) and five walks while striking out nine.

Ben Morgan went 3-for-4 for the Eagles with an RBI while Cefalu finished 2-for-4 with a walk.

Jacob Herbst (9-1) picked up the win for UW-Stevens Point. He pitched 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) and six walks with seven strikeouts. Luke Watson earned his fifth save of the year, going 0.2 of an inning.

Coady was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk while Dan Douglas finished 2-for-4 with one run and one walk.
