Box Score Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 9-6 victory at 21st-ranked UW-Oshkosh Monday afternoon at Tiedemann Field. The Eagles, 9-6 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC, earn the series win with the Titans after Monday's second game was cancelled due to darkness. The teams split a doubleheader Sunday, April 8. With Monday's loss, UW-Oshkosh is 12-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Titans are ranked 21st on this week's d3baseball.com Top-25 Poll.
The Eagles, receiving votes on d3baseball.com, took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning Monday.
Josh Rowles opened the game with a double and scored on
Cole Cefalu's one-out RBI single to make it 1-0.
Adam Cordova followed Cefalu with a double to put runners on second and third.
Jake Paulson then singled home Cefalu for a 2-0 lead and
Trevor Burmeister made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to score Cordova.
UW-L added two runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 advantage.
Nic Barnes singled to start the inning and went to second on
Garrett Novinski's sacrifice bunt. Rowles singled to move Barnes to third. After
Brooks Braga walked to load the bases, Cefalu's fielder's choice scored Barnes for a 4-0 lead. Cordova followed with a run-scoring single to knock in Rowles.
UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 5-2 with runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. Brock Guetzke had an RBI single in the second and Michael Swift added a run-scoring single in the third.
Cordova gave UW-L a 7-2 advantage with a two-run two-out single in the top of the sixth. Novinski singled with one out and Braga singled with two outs. Novinski then stole third and Braga second before Cefalu drew a walk. Cordova then singled to left field for his two-run single.
Neil Hebert had an RBI single in the sixth to make it 7-3 for UW-Oshkosh, but UW-L added two runs in the top of the eighth. Novinski walked and went to second on Rowles' sacrifice bunt. Novinski then stole third and scored on Braga's single. Cefalu followed with a single to move Braga to third who later scored on Cordova's fielder's choice.
The Titans scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and left the bases loaded to end the game. Bobby Kachel and Guetzke each had RBI singles and Hebert walked with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 9-6.
Skyler Debilzen retired Doug Beattie on a fly ball to right field to end the game.
Joel Effertz (3-1) earned the win for UW-L, going 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and two walks while striking out four. Debilzen picked up his third save, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and one walk with three strikeouts.
The top-five hitters in the Eagles' line-up combined for 12 hits Monday. Rowles finished 2-for-3; Braga 3-for-4; Cefalu 2-for-4; Cordova 3-for-5 and Paulson 2-for-5. Rowles and Braga each scored twice while Cordova finished with four RBI. Cefalu had two RBI.
Novinski also scored two runs for UW-L.
Swift (1-1) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing four hits and three runs.
Tyler Kamps was 4-for-5 with two runs for the Titans while Guetzke finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Zac Peterson and Hebert were each 2-for-4 with Hebert finishing with two RBI.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 10 hosting UW-Stout at 1 p.m. in the Eagles' home opener.
