Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon at Jim Miller Stadium at Prucha Field. The Warhawks, ranked seventh on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 11-8, and the nightcap, 8-3, to sweep the four-game series.. UW-L falls to 15-14 overall and 7-8 in the WIAC while UW-Whitewater improves to 28-5 overall and 19-2 in the conference.
In the opener, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on
Cole Cefalu's sacrifice fly to score
Josh Rowles. UW-Whitewater scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. JT Schneider had a two-run single; Michael Gonzalez an RBI single and Dylan Friend an RBI double.
UW-L came right back in the top of the third to tie the game with three runs. Cefalu and
Adam Cordova both scored on a UW-Whitewater throwing error to cut the lead to 4-3 and
Alex Cordova delivered an RBI single knocking in
Brett Jacobson to tie the game.
The Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the fourth on
Brooks Braga's solo home run, but the Warhawks took a 6-5 lead in the sixth with two runs on three UW-L errors. The game was tied on the Eagles' third error of the inning and Gonzalez gave the Warhawks the lead with an RBI single.
UW-L scored three runs in the top of the seventh to regain a 8-6 advantage.
Trevor Burmeister's bunt single tied the game and
Garrett Novinski made it 7-6 after scoring on a UW-Whitewater throwing error.
Alex Cordova's sacrifice fly gave the Eagles a 8-6 lead.
The Warhawks cut the lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning on David Cladis' RBI single. UW-Whitewater tallied four runs in the eighth for an 11-8 advantage. The tying run scored on an Eagles' throwing error and Friend made it 10-8 with a two-run home run. Cladis later added a run-scoring single.
Skyler Debilzen (1-1) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing three hits, three runs and one walk with one strikeout.
Tim Verthein started for the Eagles, going 7.0 innings. He allowed 12 hits, eight runs (two earned) and two walks with one strikeout.

Adam Cordova and Nick Barnes each had two hits for the Eagles.
Curtis Morgan (2-0) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, going 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed one walk with one strikeout. Matt Roberts started, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs (three earned) and one walk with six strikeouts.
Marty Herum had three hits for the Warhawks while Gonzalez, Friend, Cladis, Schneider and Casey Power each had two hits.
The game featured 13 errors (seven for UW-Whitewater; six for UW-L).
In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater's Steve Bartlein had an RBI single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Warhawks added two in the fourth on a Mike Mierow run-scoring double and Schneider RBI groundout.
UW-L cut the margin to 3-1 in the top of the fifth on
Ben Morgan's solo home run. Bartlein made it 4-1 with an RBI single in the fifth and UW-Whitewater added three runs in the seventh on Mikole Pierce's RBI double and run-scoring singles from Logan Peot and Schneider. Cladis had a fielder's choice for an RBI in the eighth to make it 8-1.
Taylor Kohlwey had an RBI on a fielder's choice and
Jake Paulson hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth for UW-L. The Eagles left the bases loaded to end the game.
Kevin Johnson (5-1) suffered the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs and three walks with one strikeout.
Morgan finished 2-for-4.
Tom Kerndt (6-1) picked up the victory, going 8.0 innings. He allowed five hits, three runs and three walks while striking out four.
Bartlein went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Schneider finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Pierce, Peot and Mierow each had two hits.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, May 1 hosting UW-Stout at 1 p.m.
