Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Jim Miller Stadium at Prucha Field. The Warhawks, ranked seventh on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 9-4, and the nightcap, 13-1 in seven innings. UW-L falls to 15-12 overall and 7-6 in the WIAC while UW-Whitewater improves to 26-5 overall and 17-2 in the conference.
In the opener, UW-Whitewater took a 5-0 lead after two innings. Mikole Pierce had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead while Dylan Friend drew a bases-loaded walk and Marty Herum hit a three-run double in the second.
UW-L cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the third.
Garrett Novinski had a sacrifice fly and
Cole Cefalu a run-scoring single for the Eagles.
UW-Whitewater took a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning on a Herum single and the Warhawks added two more in the fifth on a pair of RBI groundouts.
The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 8-4 in the top of the eighth on
Brooks Braga's two-run home run, but the Warhawks responded in the bottom of the inning on David Cladis' sacrifice fly.
Joel Effertz (4-2) suffered the loss for UW-L. He went 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, eight runs (six earned) and three walks with one strikeout. Braga finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Justin Lambert (6-1) picked up the win for UW-Whitewater, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out two. Herum finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and one run while Friend was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Pierce had a two-run triple. The Warhawks added one run in the second and six in third for a 10-0 lead. Michael Gonzalez had a two-run double in the third.
UW-Whitewater scored three times in the fifth before UW-L scored on a double play groundout in the top of the seventh inning.
Mark Kowalke (1-4) suffered the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs and one walk.
Josh Rowles was 2-for-3.
Scott Plaza (5-0) earned the win, going 6.0 innings, allowing four hits with three strikeouts. Herum finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. The Warhawks had 13 hits in the nightcap.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, April 28 at UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader starting at noon.
