Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 8-6, and the nightcap, 9-2. UW-L, winners of five straight overall, improves to 15-10 overall and 7-4 in the WIAC while UW-Superior falls to 14-17 overall and 7-9 in the conference.
In the opener, each team scored a run in the first inning. UW-Superior's T.J. Evanson had an RBI single while UW-L's
Adam Cordova hit a two-out run-scoring double.
The Yellowjackets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third as Sam Holden scored on a wild pitch, but the Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the frame on Cordova's two-out single.
UW-L took a 4-2 lead with a run in the fourth and fifth innings.
Josh Rowles' two-out single scored
Ben Morgan in the fourth while
Trevor Burmeister's two-out RBI single in the fifth scored Cordova.
UW-Superior tallied four times in the top of the sixth to lead 6-4. Tony Remund's single cut the lead to 4-3 and Holden's two-run single gave the Yellowjackets a 5-4 lead. UW-Superior scored its final run on a UW-L fielding error.
The Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
Cole Cefalu's sacrifice fly scored
Jordan DeBoer to make it 6-5 and
Jake Paulson's two-out single knocked in Rowles to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when UW-L scored twice. Cefalu doubled with two outs followed by the second intentional walk to Cordova. Paulson was then hit-by-pitch to load the bases and
Brooks Braga singled through the left side of UW-Superior's infield to score Cefalu and Cordova.
UW-Superior put the tying runs on base with two outs in the ninth, but Remund popped out to shortstop to end the game.
Skyler Debilzen (1-0) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 3.2 innings in relief. He allowed five hits while striking out two.
Kevin Johnson started for the Eagles, going 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, six runs (four earned) and four walks with one strikeout.
Eight of nine starters had a hit for UW-L. Cordova was 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and two runs. Rowles finished 2-for-3 with two walks, one RBI and three runs while Cefalu was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. The Eagles scored seven of their eight runs with two outs.
Travis Elwood (1-4) suffered the loss for UW-Superior, going 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed three hits, two runs and one walk with two strikeouts. Kyle Gauger started for the Yellowjackets, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and two walks.
Remund was 3-for-5 while Evanson and Tom Fairbanks both went 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, UW-Superior took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Tom Fairbanks' two-out single. UW-L came right back in the bottom of the first, batting around and scoring five runs on five hits. Cordova's infield single tied the game and
Brett Jacobson's two-out two-run single gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Burmeister then scored on a wild pitch and
Nic Barnes hit an RBI single.
UW-L added two unearned runs in the fourth on Paulson's two-out single for a 7-1 lead. The Eagles made it 9-1 in the seventh with two more unearned runs. Rowles was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and
Garrett Novinski drew a bases loaded walk.
UW-Superior finished the scoring with Jeff Miller's sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth.
Tim Verthein (2-5) earned the win for UW-L, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five.
Seven of nine starters for the Eagles had at least one hit in the second game and the first seven hitters in the line-up scored at least one run. Rowles, who scored five runs in the twinbill, was 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and two runs in the nightcap. Jacobson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. UW-L scored eight of its nine runs with two outs.
The Eagles scored 15 of their 17 runs in Wednesday's doubleheader with two outs.
Graham Miller (0-2) took the loss for UW-Superior in the nightcap, pitching 0.2 of an inning. He allowed five hits, five runs one walk.
Evanson was 3-for-3 with two doubles in the second game.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 27 at seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater at noon.
