Baseball Team Earns Doubleheader Sweep of UW-Platteville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 16-2 in seven innings, and the nightcap, 9-5. UW-L improves to 13-10 overall and 5-4 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville drops to 2-21 overall and 2-12 in the conference.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Platteville, but were moved to La Crosse due to unplayable conditions at Kendall Murray Field. UW-Platteville was the home team in both contests Sunday.

In the opener, Joel Effertz (4-1) earned the complete-game victory. He pitched 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out 12.

The Eagles scored three times in the top of the first. Cole Cefalu's double scored Josh Rowles to give UW-L a 1-0 lead. Cefalu later scored on a UW-Platteville fielding error and Trevor Burmeister's single made it 3-0.

Cefalu hit a solo home run in the top of the third to give UW-L a 4-0 advantage before Evan Greco hit an RBI single for UW-Platteville to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Eagles scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 9-1 lead. Burmeister had an RBI double in the fifth while Adam Cordova hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth.

UW-Platteville scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth before UW-L tallied seven runs in the top of the seventh to lead 16-2. Nic Barnes had an RBI single in the seventh while Rowles, Cordova and Jake Paulson each drew bases-loaded walks. Seth Feldman finished the scoring with a two-run single.

The Eagles' 16 runs are a season-high. UW-L finished with 15 hits in Sunday's opener. Burmeister was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI while Rowles, Garrett Novinski, Cefalu and Cordova each had two hits. Cordova had a game-high four RBI while Cefalu finished with a game-high four runs scored while totaling three RBI. Novinski scored three runs with Rowles and Cordova each finishing with two.

Adam Theis (1-5) took the loss for UW-Platteville, going 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs (three earned) with three strikeouts.

Five different players finished with a hit for the Pioneers.

In the nightcap, UW-L scored twice in the top of the first on a Cordova sacrifice fly and Burmeister run-scoring single. The Eagles added three runs in the second inning before the Pioneers cut the margin to 5-1 with a Topher Scheeler RBI groundout.

Brett Jacobson gave UW-L a 6-1 lead with an RBI single in the third, but UW-Platteville scored twice in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Eagles added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth for an 8-3 lead. Novinski finished the scoring for UW-L with an RBI double in the sixth.

UW-Platteville scored twice in the sixth on a Jon Lewerke sacrifice fly and Tyler Jacobson run-scoring single.

Mark Kowalke (1-3) picked up the victory in the second game, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and three walks with one strikeout. Travis Kruckow went 1.2 innings with one walk and two strikeouts while Skyler Debilzen pitched 2.0 innings while striking out three.

Novinski finished 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI while Burmeister was 3-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI. Rowles was 2-for-3 with four runs and Ben Morgan finished 2-for-5 with a run.

Bill Oppriecht (1-6) took the loss for UW-Platteville, going 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits, nine runs (seven earned) and three walks with three strikeouts.

Bobby Bean and Greco each had two hits for the Pioneers.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 24 hosting UW-Superior at 1 p.m.
