Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with UW-Platteville

Kevin Johnson earned the complete-game shutout victory in Saturday's nightcap.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Pioneers won the opener, 7-3, before the Eagles came back to take the nightcap, 2-0. UW-L is now 11-10 overall and 3-4 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville is 7-19 overall and 2-10 in the conference.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Platteville, but were moved to La Crosse due to unplayable conditions at Kendall Murray Field. UW-Platteville was the home team in both contests Saturday.

In the opener, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on George Jester's RBI single. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Adam Cordova opened the inning with a double followed by a Garrett Novinski walk. Josh Rowles then had a bunt single for a hit to load the bases. Brett Jacobson drove in Cordova with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest and Nic Barnes followed with a sacrifice fly to score Novinski for a 2-1 lead.

UW-L took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third on Cordova's two-out RBI double to score Cole Cefalu. UW-Platteville tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on Jester's two-run home run.

The Pioneers took a 4-3 lead in the fourth as Casey Schroeder walked with the bases-loaded. UW-Platteville added three runs in the sixth on run-scoring singles from Bobby Bean, Evan Greco and Jon Lewerke.

Tim Verthein (1-5) suffered the loss for UW-L, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs and five walks while striking out six. Ben Cejka pitched 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and two runs with four strikeouts.

Cordova finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI while Rowles was 3-for-4. Cefalu finished 2-for-5 with a run.

Shane Murphy (2-2) earned the win for UW-Platteville, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, three runs and one walk with four strikeouts. Trevor Hall picked up the save, going 1.0 inning wiht one strikeout.

Jester was 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run.

In the nightcap, UW-L's Kevin Johnson (5-0) pitched the complete-game shutout. He went 9.0 innings, allowing nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The Eagles tallied single runs in the top of the second and third innings. Novinski hit a solo home run in the second while Brooks Braga had a sacrifice fly to score Ben Morgan with an unearned run in the third.

UW-L was held to five hits by five different players.

Mike Boushley (2-3) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 9.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one eanred) and one walk while striking out eight.

Schroeder and Lewerke each finished 3-for-4 for the Pioneers.

The teams will meet in another doubleheader Sunday, April 21 starting at noon at North Campus Field.
