Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field in the Eagles' home opener. UW-L won the opener, 7-4, before St. Scholastica came back to win the nightcap, 7-5. With the split, UW-L is now 10-7 while St. Scholastica is 12-5. Both teams are receiving votes on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll.
In the opener, UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
Jordan DeBoer opened with a single and moved to third on
Josh Rowles' sacrifice bunt and a St. Scholastica throwing error.
Brooks Braga followed with a double to score DeBoer. Rowles later scored on
Adam Cordova's ground out.
The Saints tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a Jordan O'Neill single and Kyle Flagstad sacrifice fly, but the Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning with the help of three St. Scholastica errors. Rowles gave UW-L a 3-2 lead after a St. Scholastica throwing error and
Trevor Burmeister made it 4-2 with an RBI single.
Garrett Novinski's run-scoring single knocked in Cordova with Burmeister also scoring on the play after a fielding error for a 6-2 lead.
UW-L added a run in the bottom of the seventh to lead 7-2 as
Brett Jacobson scored on Novinsk's sacrifice bunt. St. Scholastica tallied two runs in the top of the ninth. Jake Casareto had an RBI single and Tyler Henderson walked with the bases loaded. The Saints' Shayne Ciernia grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the game.
Kevin Johnson (4-0) earned the win for the Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three.
Skyler Debilzen picked up his fourth save of the season, going 0.2 of an inning with one walk.
Burmeister finished 4-for-4 with a run scored and RBI in the opener while Braga and DeBoer each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Braga also had an RBI. Novinski finished with two RBI in the game.
Jordan Risse (0-1) took the loss for the Saints, going 2.0 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out three. Kyle Jensen started for St. Scholastica, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk.
O'Neill, Flagstad, Ciernia, Austin Colvard and Andy Schwantes each had two hits for St. Scholastica.
In the nightcap, Cordova gave UW-L a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a run-scoring double to knock in Braga. St. Scholastica tallied two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Parker Olson scored on an Eagles' error to tie the game and Padraic Getchell hit an RBI single to give the Saints the lead.

The Saints scored four times in the top of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Jake Kuschke and Getchell each had RBI singles while Colvard had an RBI fielder's choice and Kuschke later scored on a UW-L error. St. Scholastica added a run in the top of the seventh to lead 7-2 on Casareto's single.
UW-L tallied three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Cordova's RBI single cut the lead to 7-3 while Burmeister's fielder's choice and Jacobson's run-scoring single made it 7-5, but Novinski grounded out to end the game with the tying runs on base.
Mark Kowalke (0-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, six runs (three earned) and four walks with one strikeout.
Cordova finished 3-for-5 with two RBI while
Cole Cefalu was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Michael Swanson (4-0) earned the win for St. Scholastica, going 3.0 innings in relief. He allowed two hits while striking out four. Mickie Keuning started, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks with one strikeout.
Colvard, Kuschke and Getchell each had two hits.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 17 hosting UW-Superior at 1 p.m.
