UW-La Crosse Earns Win over Third-Ranked Luther College

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 22-15 victory over Luther College (Iowa) Thursday night in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles, ranked 19th on National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll, improve to 2-1 on the season.  The Norse, ranked third on the NWCA Poll, fall to 0-1 on the year.  It is UW-L's seventh straight dual victory over Luther.

Luther won the first two matches to take a 6-0 lead.  Garrett Wangsness won by decision (5-1) over UW-L's Quenten Fisher at 125-pounds while Evan Obert won by decision (9-8) over the Eagles' Dustin Weinmann.  Wangsness is ranked 10th in NCAA Division III at 125-pounds while Obert is seventh at 133.

UW-L cut the lead to 6-4 as Cody See won by major decision (12-2) over Dakota Gray at 141-pounds.  The Eagles took their first lead of the night at 149-pounds with Dylan Shaffer winning by fall (5:21) over Jesse Carlisle. The win gave UW-L a 10-6 lead. 

The Norse then won three straight matches by decision to take a 15-10 lead.  Blake Letney won by decision (1-0) over Derek Weinmann at 157-pounds; Garrett Bonte won by decision (5-1) over Tyler Schneider at 165-pounds and Jarid Groth won by decision (6-1) over Richard Carlson at 174.  Bonte is ranked fifth in the country. 

The Eagles cut the deficit to 15-13 at 184-pounds as Eric Twohey won by decision (7-6) over Luther's third-ranked Jayden DeVilbiss.  

Mike Minske then gave UW-L a 19-15 lead at 197-pounds as he won by fall (4:14) over Nick Pearch.  Jake Minske finished the dual with a win by decision (10-3) over Tyler Walls at 285-pounds.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, December 7 hosting the Candlewood Suites Duals.  The Eagles face Loras College (Iowa) at 9 a.m., Southwest Minnesota State University at 11 a.m. and Waldorf College (Iowa) at 1 p.m.
