Box Score Maitland, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 75-70 in overtime to fifth-ranked Hope College (Mich.) Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the RDV Sportsplex D3 Basketball Classic. The Eagles drop to 6-5 on the season while the Flying Dutch improve to 11-0 on the year.
Hope led 16-8 with 13:13 remaining in the first half after a Anna Kaufmann three-pointer, but UW-L cut the lead to 17-12 with 11:06 left on a
Rachel Atchison jumper. The Flying Dutch went on a 8-2 run to lead 25-14 with 8:11 remaining.
The Flying Dutch led 29-18 with 6:05 left in the opening half after a Mandy Traversa three-point field goal, but the Eagles went on a 12-0 run to take a 30-29 advantage with 2:04 remaining. Atchison had seven points in the run as Hope missed six straight shots from the field. Hope took a 35-33 halftime lead on Maura McAfee's jumper with :15 left.
Hope opened the second half scoring eight of the first 11 points to lead 43-36, but UW-L scored the next seven points to force a 43-43 tie with 12:43 remaining in the game. The Eagles took a 51-48 lead with 8:41 left after a pair of
Maggi Bishop free throws, but the Flying Dutch went on a 10-2 run to lead 58-53 with 3:51 remaining.
UW-L regained the lead at 59-58 after Atchison converted a pair of free throws with 1:55 left, but Hope's Megan Kelley hit a jumper with 1:29 remaining to give the Flying Dutch a 60-59 lead. Kelley made two free throws with :20 left for a 62-59 lead, but UW-L's
Mallory Cramer hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe with :13 remaining to make it a one-point game. Kelley was fouled with :12 left and made both free throws for a 64-61 lead.
Atchison then forced overtime as she made a three-pointer with :04 left.
Hope never trailed in overtime, scoring the first four points to lead 68-64. UW-L later cut the deficit to 69-68 with 2:59 left on a free throws by Atchison, but Hope scored the next five points and UW-L could get no closer than four the rest of the game. Four starters fouled out for UW-L in the game, including three in overtime.
UW-L shot 42.9% from the field, including 21.4% (three-of-14) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 82.6% (19-of-23) at the free throw line.
Atchison led four UW-L players in double figures with 17 points.
Jenna Anderson and
Marina Kneeland finished with 12 points each while Cramer had 11 points and eight rebounds. Kneeland added five rebounds and five assists.
Katie Ehlen tied Cramer for the team lead with eight rebounds.
Atchison and Kneeland were named to the all-tournament team. Atchison averaged 10.5 points and 2.5 steals in two games in the tournament while Kneeland averaged 10.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Hope shot 30.3% from the field, including 30.4% (seven-of-23) from three-point range. The Flying Dutch shot 71.0% (22-of-31) at the line.
Kelley, who was named the most valuable player of the tournament, scored 25 points Saturday to lead Hope. She also had seven rebounds. McAfee finished with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Brittany Berry had 11 points. McAfee was also selected to the all-tournament team.
UW-L returns to action Thursday, January 2 hosting Mount Mary College (Wis.) at 7 p.m.
