UW-Superior 79, UW-La Crosse 68
Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 79-68 at UW-Superior Saturday afternoon in Mertz Mortorelli Gym in the regular-season finale for both squads. The Eagles finish their regular season at 16-9 overall and 9-7 in the WIAC while the Yellowjackets improve to 12-13 overall and 5-11 in the league. Both teams earned berths in the WIAC Tournament which begins Tuesday, February 21. UW-L, the tournament's fifth seed, will travel to fourth-seed UW-River Falls. UW-Superior is the sixth seed and will play at third-seeded UW-Whitewater.
The Yellowjackets led by as many as seven points in the first half Saturday, including 17-10 with 13:11 remaining. The Eagles used a 13-5 run to take a 23-22 lead with 7:43 left on a
Kassie Robinson layup. Each team followed with 5-0 runs with UW-L taking a 28-27 lead with 4:37 remaining in the half. UW-Superior finished the half on a 8-3 run to lead 35-31.
The Eagles could get no closer than three points in the second half. UW-Superior led 60-53 with 6:39 left before UW-L cut the lead to 60-56, but the Yellowjackets used an 11-5 run to lead 71-61 with 1:50 remaining. The Eagles could get no closer than nine points the rest of the game.
Robinson led UW-L with 23 points and six rebounds while
Mallory Cramer finished with 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Katie Ehlen finished with seven points while
Rachael Salata and
Briana Radowicz each had six.
The Eagles shot 39.2% from the field, including 33.3% (four-of-12) from three-point range, and 80.0% (24-of-30) at the free throw line.
Bri Davis led UW-Superior with 23 points while Hailey Hart had 16 points. Davis added six rebounds and Hart seven. Keely Deadrick finished with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds while Deandra Vavra had 10 points.
The Yellowjackets shot 47.3% from the field, including 55.6% (10-of-18) from three-point range, and 85.0% (17-of-20) at the free throw line.
UW-L returns to action Tuesday, February 21 in the first round of the WIAC Tournament at UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. The Falcons won both of this year's meetings, 56-47 in La Crosse January 11 and 69-53 in River Falls February 15.
