Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's tennis team earned a pair of wins Saturday in Cedar Rapids. The Eagles defeated host Coe College 5-4 and then picked up a 9-0 victory over Monmouth College (Ill.). UW-L is now 5-1 on the season, winning five straight matches.
UW-L handed Coe its first loss of the season with its win Saturday morning. The Kohawks, ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III Central Region, took four of the six singles matches, but the Eagles swept the doubles competition.
In singles, UW-L's
Nick Piotrowski defeated Greg Janssen at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2) while
Nathan Fekete earned the win over Victor Khristenko at No. 3 (6-1, 6-4).
Coe's Elliot Rausa beat
Joey Van Lieshout at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2); Scott Stegemann defeated
Steven Quiring at No. 4 (6-7, 6-0, 10-6); Jonathan Roger beat
Paul Vickers at No. 5 (6-3, 6-1) and Curtis Newman earned the win over
Jon Mahvi at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2).
UW-L swept the doubles matches with Van Lieshout/Piotrowski defeated Rausa/Stegemann at No. 1 (8-6); Fekete/Quiring defeated Khristenko/Newman at No. 2 (9-7) and Mahvi/Vickers beat Janssen/Kyle Tucker at No. 3 (9-8).
Against Monmouth, Piotrowski (No. 1), Van Lieshout (No. 2), Fekete (No. 3), Quiring (No. 4), Vickers (No. 5) and
Taylor Schliewe (No. 6) swept the singles for the Eagles. Piotrowski beat Sam Graf (6-2, 6-3), Van Lieshout beat Chris Utterback (7-5, 7-5) and Fekete defeated Ben Morrow (6-0, 6-4).
Quiring earned a win over Gabe Cheng (6-3, 6-0); Vickers beat Brian Miller (6-1, 6-0) and Schliewe defeated Matt Smith (6-0, 6-1).
In doubles, Van Lieshout/Piotrowski defeated Graf/Utterback at No. 1 (8-4); Fekete/Quiring defeated Morrow/Cheng at No. 2 (8-5) and Mahvi/Vickers defeated Miller/Smith at No. 3 (8-0).
UW-L returns to action Saturday, Feb. 20 facing the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 3:30 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
