UW-L Advances at NWCA Duals

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team advanced to the fifth-place match at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals Sunday morning with a 35-3 victory over Cornell College (Iowa). The Eagles, now 10-2 in duals this season, will face ninth-ranked Concordia College Moorhead (Minn.) for fifth-place Sunday at 1 p.m.

The NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals are taking place in the University of Northern Iowa UNI-Dome.

UW-L, ranked first in NCAA Division III, went 2-1 in Saturday's action at the duals. The Eagles defeated the University of Dubuque, Iowa (32-6) before falling to Delaware Valley College, Pa. (22-15). UW-L came back in the consolation bracket to defeat UW-Whitewater (23-16).

Cornell entered Sunday's match ranked 16th.

The Eagles won nine of 10 matches in their victory over Cornell Sunday morning. Albie McKinney gave UW-L a 6-0 lead at 125-pounds with a win by fall (1:39) over Wesley Schoo. Top-ranked Bebeto Yewah won by decision (3-2) over eighth-ranked Nichalos Nothern at 133-pounds to give the Eagles a 9-0 lead.

Alex Dahl made it 12-0 with a win by decision (6-1) over Tigue Snider at 141 and Matt Mauseth gave the Eagles a 16-0 lead with a win by major decision (16-6) over Zach Wilson at 149-pounds. Mauseth is currently ranked fourth in the country.

Cornell picked up its lone victory at 157-pounds as seventh-ranked Nicholas Loughlin earned a win by decision (11-5) over UW-L's Ryan Farwell.

UW-L took the final five matches to earn the team victory. Ninth-ranked Cory Ferguson won by decision (10-5) over Colton Moore at 165-pounds while second-ranked Mike Schmitz won by major decision (13-3) over Joseph Hambleton at 174-pounds.

The Eagles' Mitch Artist and John Poppie each won by decision. Artist defeated Andrew Roberts (5-0) at 184 and Poppie beat Andrew Anderson (9-5) at 197. Top-ranked Dan Laurent finished the dual with a win by fall (1:09) over Wyatt Bauman at 285-pounds.
