Baseball Falls To UW-Whitewater In WIAC Championship

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team fell twice to UW-Whitewater in the Championship games of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culvers). 

THE BASICS
  • Result Game 1: #4 UW-Whitewater 11, UW-La Crosse 7

  • Location: Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium, Whitewater, Wis.
  • Records: UW-La Crosse 32-12, UW-Whitewater 41-4
  • Up Next: UW-La Crosse will now wait to see if they get an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III National Tournament. The tournament field will be announced on Monday, at 11 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead on Jackson Spring's solo home run in the top of the second inning. 
  • Brady Burrill tripled to lead off the bottom of the second inning before Emiliano Ramos walked to put runners on the corner. Sam Viniard would bring Burrill home with a ground out to second base. Then with two outs, Keegan Fleischman singled to right field to score Ramos while AJ Levy's double put Fleischman on third. Chris Calico would then give UWL a 4-1 lead with his single to right field. 
  • The Warhawks would then tie the game up at 4-4 in the third inning on Leyten Bowers 3-run home run.
  • In the fourth inning, Ramos led off with a double, moved to third on Viniard's fly out to right and scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. 
  • UW-Whitewater would take a 7-5 lead in their half of the fifth inning Jackson Spring drove in two runs with a single and Keli Grennier drove in a run with a single. 
  • Calico's double in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Viniard who had doubled earlier in the inning.
  • The Warhawks would get that run back in the top of the seventh on Bowers RBI single. 
  • UWL cut their deficit to 8-7 in their half of the seventh as Burrill scored when Viniard reached on a fielders choice and a throwing error.
  • In the ninth inning, the Warhawks would score three runs to extend their lead to 11-7. 
  • UW-Whitewater relief pitcher Theo Zeidler would retire the Eagles in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. 

    Game Two
  • The Eagles wasted no time scoring as Calico led off the game with a double and scored on Rowan's triple down the right field line. Then with one out, Burrill grounded out to shortstop which scored Rowan and put UWL up 2-0.
  • Fleischman would put the Eagles up 3-0 with his third home run of the season. 
  • Dominik McVay give the Warhawks their first run of the game with a solo home run in the second. He would then homer again, a 2-run home run, in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. UW-Whitewater would add two more runs in the fifth to lead 5-3. 
  • With one out in the fifth, Calico singled and went to second when Rowan walked. After Luke Walton was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Burrill hit a sacrifice fly followed by a Ramos RBI single which scored Rowan to tie the game at 5-5. 
  • After the Warhawks took a 7-5 lead, UWL got a tun in the seventh to to cut their deficit to 7-6. 
  • An RBI single and an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh gave UW-Whitewater a 9-6 lead. The Warhawks then hit two more RBI singles in the eighth to extend their lead to 11-6. 
  • In the ninth inning and with one out, Burrill doubled followed by a walk for Ramos. Viniard would then give the Eagles some hope as he hit his fifth home run of the season to cut the Warhawks lead to 11-9. But that would be all the Eagles would get. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with seven runs on 11 hits and four  walks.
  • Calico led the Eagles offense finishing 4-for-5 with three RBIs while Ramos finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. 
  • Austin Olla (3-1) suffered the loss as he came on in relief and allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in 4.0 innings. Chayce Osterhaus made the start for the Eagles as he went 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits.  
  • UW-Whitewater finished with 11 runs on 13 hits and five walks. 
  • Abe Herchenbach earned the win for the Warhawks as he came on in relief to pitch 1.2 innings and allowed two hits. 
  • Bowers (3-5, HR, 3 RBI) and Spring (2-for-3, HR, walk) led the Warhawks offense. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with nine runs on 12 hits and three walks in game two.
  • Calico finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Burrill was 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. 
  • Logan Zickert (1-3) came on in relief to pitch 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks to suffer the loss. Trace Vrbancic got the start for the Eagles as he gave up five runs on six hits and two walks in 3.0 innings.  
  • UW-Whitewater finished with 11 runs on 14 hits and four walks.
  • Benjy Tucker (7-1) earned the win as he came in out of the bull pen to allow just one hit in 1.1 innings of relief. 
  • McVay led the Warhawks as he finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
