Glendale, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Friday at MSOE Raiders Stadium. The Eagles won the opener, 3-1, and the nightcap, 5-3.
UWL improves to 15-8 overall in extending its winning streak to four while MSOE (Wis.) drops to 3-17.
In the opener, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Lindsey Steien's home run. MSOE (Wis.) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Jayda Nelson reached on an error to lead-off the winning and went to second on another UWL error on Lylah DeArmond's fielder's choice. Olivia Beals singled to load the bases and Nelson came in on Reese Konczal's sacrifice fly to make it 1-1.
The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs,
Josie Flom doubled and scored on an
Ava Jaehnke single to give UWL a 2-1 advantage. The Raiders stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the fourth.
UWL extended its lead to 3-1 in the sixth.
Kasey Brouchoud doubled to start the inning and was replaced by pinch-runner
Carly Gross. After
Marissa Pease walked, Flom's fly-out moved the runners into scoring position. Jaehnke's sacrifice fly scored Gross to give UWL a two-run lead.
Carmen Follette (5-2) earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out three.
Claire Springer went 2.2 innings with one strikeout.
Brynne Bieri picked up her first save of the season, striking out the only batter she faced.
UWL had seven hits in the opener with Steien finishing 2-for-2 with a home run. Jaenke had two RBI.
Katie Pollock (2-7) suffered the loss for MSOE (Wis.), pitching a complete-game. She went 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and four walks while striking out six.
The Raiders totaled four hits with Rikka Ludvigson going 2-for-3.
MSOE (Wis.) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the nightcap as Emma Smith walked to start the inning and scored on an Ludvigson double.
UWL scored twice in the top of the third.
Chloe Brown walked to lead-off the inning and stole second. Steien's one-out run-scoring double knocked in Brown to tie the game at 1-1.
Brooke Howard followed with an RBI single to score Steien and give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
UWL extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth. Howard singled with one out and
Aliyah Langrehr's pinch-hit infield single with two outs advanced Howard to second.
Amber Gonzalez followed with a two-run double to knock in both runs.
The Raiders cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Autumn Sadler led-off with a double and scored on Nelson's two-out double.
Brown walked with one out in the top of the sixth for UWL, stole second and came in on pinch-hitter
Madalynn Frederixon's double to give the Eagles a 5-2 advantage.
DeArmond singled to lead-off the bottom of the seventh for the Raiders as a pinch-hitter. Smith pinch-ran, went to second on a passed ball and to third on a Ludvigson ground-out. Carlee Emery's two-out double scored pinch-runner Charlotte Robinson to cut the lead to 5-3, but
Kaeley Niemiec struck out Nelson for the final out.
Bree Holmes (2-1) earned the victory, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and four walks. Brooklyn Bigalke pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout while Niemiec picked up her first save. She went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out one.
The Eagles had seven hits with Steien going 2-for-4 and Howard 2-for-3. Gonzalez had two RBI.
Kaitlyn DeNapoli (0-1) suffered the loss, pitching 4.2 innings for MSOE (Wis.). She allowed six hits, four runs and three walks with one strikeout.
The Raider totaled seven hits as Emery finished 2-for-4.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 8 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at 2 p.m.
