UWL Drops Doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point; Howard with Pair of Triples in Nightcap

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a pair of games at UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon at McCarty Memorial Field. The Pointers earned a 6-0 win in the opener and 7-2 in the nightcap.

UWL drops to 19-15 overall and 3-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Stevens Point improves to 23-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

The Pointers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning in the opener. Rachel Madsen reached on an error to lead-off the inning, followed by a walk to Hailee Thompson. A sacrifice bunt by Kaitlyn Roberts moved the runners into scoring position. After a pop-out, Sophie Schmidt delivered a two-run single to score both runs for a 2-0 lead.

UW-Stevens Point added two runs in the third. Thompson singled and Robert walked to start the inning. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Thompson came in on Trinity Otto's sacrifice bunt to make it 3-0. Schmidt's RBI groundout scored Roberts for a 4-0 lead.

Two runs scored in the bottom of the fifth for the Pointers. Schmidt came in on Ella Smith's single and Paige Kislow scored on the play after an Eagles' throwing error.

UWL was held to two hits, one each from Marissa Pease and Amber Gonzalez.

Carmen Follette (8-5) suffered the loss, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, four runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out three. Claire Springer went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk with two strikeouts while Brynne Bieri pitched 1.0 inning.

UW-Stevens Point finished with five hits as Schmidt went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Thompson scored twice.

Morgan Harwood (8-3) earned the complete-game victory, going 7.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out six.

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the nightcap after Brooke Howard tripled and scored on Lindsay Steien's sacrifice bunt. UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Thompson doubled with one out and Roberts walked. After a strikeout, Schmidt delivered a two-run double scoring Thompson and Roberts to give the Pointers a 2-1 lead. Smith's single knocked in Schmidt to extend the lead to 3-1.

Madsen's groundout scored Amelia Brinkman and Ashley LaCavalier scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to extend the Pointers lead to 5-1. Roberts scored on a wild pitch in the fifth while Ashley Zygowski added an RBI single to extend it to 7-1.

Howard tripled in the top of the sixth for UWL and scored on Steien's groundout to cut the lead to 7-2.

UWL finished with five hits in the nightcap with Howard going 2-for-3 while scoring both runs. Steien had both RBI.

Kaeley Niemiec (4-4) took the loss for the Eagles. She pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three hits, three runs and two walks while striking out two. Brooklyn Bigalke went 3.1 innings in relief, allowing three hits, four runs and two walks with one strikeout. Bieri pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one hit while striking out two.

UW-Stevens Point had seven hits. Schmidt finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Roberts scored twice.

Kodi Rizzo (6-0) pickup the victory, pitching 4.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits, one run and one walk with six strikeouts. Mallorie Kreuser started, going 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out one.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 29 with a doubleheader at UW-River Falls at 2 p.m.
