La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team earned a come from behind 8-7 victory over The College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Veterans Memorial Field.
The Eagles improve to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Bennies drop to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Ava Schiltz tallied three goals in Saturday's win.
UWL honored seven seniors on Saturday, including
Jadyn Constine,
Anna Jenson,
Megan Maloney,
Gretchen McCann,
Ava Schiltz,
Lydia Spencer and
Kara Stay.
UWL used a 4-1 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to secure the win.Â
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with Schiltz scoring at 13:25 and
Tori Katzenmeyer at 12:10. The Bennies cut the lead to 2-1 with 7:46 left in the first quarter on an Emma Theisen goal before Schiltz gave UWL a 3-1 advantage with 5:28 remaining. Rayna Malmberg cut the deficit to 3-2 with 2:44 left in the first quarter for Saint Benedict (Minn.).
Theisen scored the only two goals of the second quarter to give the Bennies a 4-3 halftime lead. Her second goal of the quarter was man-up. Malmberg assisted both goals.
Maloney's goal with 11:53 left in the third quarter tied the contest, 4-4. Tess Cavanaugh's man-up goal off a Kyra Stofer assist gave Saint Benedict (Minn.) a 5-4 lead with 10:20 remaining in the quarter. Bella Brisk extended the lead to 6-4 with 1:33 left.
Evie Brilz opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with 12:45 remaining to cut the lead to 6-5. Maloney's goal with 4:19 left tied the game and Schiltz scored a man-up goal with 3:11 remaining to give UWL a 7-6 lead. Theisen tied the contest at 7-7 with :40 left, but Maloney notched the game-winner with :20 remaining.Â
Stefania Rossi recorded 14 saves.
UWL had 21 shots in the game with 13 on goal. Schiltz and Maloney each had three goals for the Eagles. Maloney finished with a team-high eight shots.Â
Stefania Rossi earned the win, recording 14 saves and team-leading six ground balls.
Angie Olla had four draw controls.Â
Saint Benedict (Minn.) finished with 32 shots, including 15 on goal. Theisen recorded four goals in the game while Malmberg had one goal and two assists. Ava Mosley led the Bennies with eight shots.
Ashley Fischer suffered the loss, registering eight saves. Ella Steinke had four ground balls.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 22 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 6:30 p.m.
