Chicago, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team fell, 20-7, at 21st-ranked the University of Chicago (Ill.) Friday night at Stagg Field.
UWL drops to 8-4 on the season while Chicago (Ill.) improves to 9-4.
In the first meeting between the teams in school history, Chicago (Ill.) took a 1-0 lead with 14:15 remaining in the first quarter on a Kaylin Oey goal and Avery Song assist. UWL tied the game with 6:14 left in the opening quarter on
Evie Brilz' goal. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead with 5:36 remaining as
Ava Schiltz scored. The Maroons forced a 2-2 tie after the first quarter with Peyton McGuire scoring with 4:35 left.
Chicago (Ill.) scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead. Wynne Boggan gave the Maroons a 3-2 lead with 14:31 remaining. McGuire and Boggan extended the lead to 5-2. Brilz cut the lead to 5-3 with 7:22 left and
Anna Millard's goal on
Megan Maloney's assist with 5:12 remaining cut it to 5-4.
The Maroons scored the next six goals to take a 11-4 halftime advantage. McGuire scored a pair of goals in the 6-0 run.
Kelly Callaghan scored two of the first four goals of the third quarter for Chicago (Ill.) as the Maroons extended their lead to 15-4. Schiltz cut it 15-5 with 7:10 left in the third quarter. After Song gave the Maroons a 16-5 lead,
Angie Olla scored for the Eagles with
Tori Katzenmeyer recording the assist to make it 16-6 after three quarters.
Chicago (Ill.) scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter before Maloney finished the scoring for UWL.
UWL finished with 15 shots, including 10 on goal. Schiltz and Brilz led the Eagles with two goals each. Schiltz had a team-high five shots. Millard and
Lydia Spencer each had two ground balls while Maloney recorded five draw controls.
Stefania Rossi suffered the loss in goal, recording 12 saves.
Chicago (Ill.) totaled 40 shots with 29 on goal. McGuire led the Maroons with four goals and nine shots while Song, Callaghan and Boggan each scored three times. Callaghan and Boggan tied for the team lead with four assists. Emily Sensenich led Chicago (Ill.) with five ground balls. Oey had seven draw controls.
Lily Brill earned the win, registering four saves.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 15 hosting Augsburg University (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
