Eagles Take Two From UW-Stout; Palm Hits Three Home Runs And Drives In Six Runs

Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team came from behind in game one while jumping out to a big lead in game two as they swept a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with UW-Stout on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • Neither team was able to get their offense going early as the game entered the fifth inning tied 0-0 as the two teams combined for just three hits. UWL Would finally strike in the top of the fifth inning as Andrew Palm hit his second home run of the season to put UWL up 1-0.
  • UW-Stout would take a 3-1 lead on a Gavyn Schacher 3-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. 
  • UWL would get a run back in the seventh inning as Palm would hit his second solo home run of the game to make it 3-2. 
  • Then with one out in the top of the eighth inning, AJ Levy pinch hit and walked. He would then steal second base before scoring on Brady Burrill's single to left field to tie the game at 3-3. Burrill would then steal both second and third base before Palm walked to put runners at the corners with one out. Luke Walton would give UWL a 4-3 lead as he executed a sacrifice bunt which scored Burrill from third. 
  • With one out in the UW-Stout half of the 8th inning, Sam Graunke singled and went to third on Nick Webster's single to left. Cal Ulven would then tie the game at 4-4 with his single to right field which scored Graunke. Still with just one out, UWL relief pitcher Logan Zickert would induce a line drive double play to get out of the jam with the score still 4-4. 
  • Keegan Fleischman singled to lead off the Eagles ninth inning and advanced to second on Chris Calico's sacrifice bunt. Fleischman would move to third on a wild pitch followed by Charley Rowan walking to put runners at first and third. Then with two outs, Rowan stole second base followed by Burrill's single through the left side to give UWL a 6-4 lead as Rowan and Fleishman came in to score. Palm would then hit his third home run of the game to give UWL an 8-4 lead. 
  • Zickert would allow a one out single in the ninth inning but that would be all the Blue Devils would get in their final at-bat. 

    Game Two
  • Calico led off game two with a single and advanced to third on Rowan's double. Palm would walk to load the bases before the Blue Devils recorded the second out of the inning. Evan Schmidt would then walk to force in Calico while Emiliano Ramos singled to score Rowan and five UWL an early 2-0 lead. 
  • The Eagles would extend their lead to 4-0 in the second inning as Palm drove in two more runs with a single which scored AJ Levy who had reached on a fielding error and Rowan who was hit by a pitch. 
  • Ramos would make it 5-0 with his third home run of the year. Later in the third inning, Levy reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Calico's double to make it 6-0.
  • Bryan Tunison and Mike Pustelnik each hit two run home runs in the bottom of the third inning cut the Blue Devils deficit to 6-4. 
  • A single run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth would put UWL up 11-5. Burrill scored the run in the fourth on a wild pitch for the Eagles. Rowan would draw a bases loaded walk in the fifth while Burrill hit a sacrifice fly for the first two runs of the fifth inning. Calico reached on a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch while Fleischman's single scored Rowan to make it 11-5.
  • Fleischman's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and Rowan's RBI single in the eighth would cap the scoring for the Eagles as they led 13-5.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • UWL finished with eight runs on 10 hits and five walks in game one.
  • Palm would finish game one 3-for-4 with three home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored. 
  • Burrill also sparked the Eagles offense as he was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Zickert (1-1) came on in relief to pitch the final 1.2 innings and record the win as he allowed two hits. Chayce Osterhaus made the start for UWL as he allowed four runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out eight in 7.1 innings of work.  
  • UW-Stout finished the first game with four runs on 12 hits and one walk. 
  • Wes Cain (0-1) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils as he allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings of relief. Treysen Witt went the first 6.2 innings for UW-Stout and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk. 
  • Ulven led the Blue Devils as he finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Schacher was 1-for-4 with three RBIs. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with 13 runs on 15 hits and seven walks in game two.
  • Calico (4-for-6, three runs scored and an RBI), Rowan (2-for-4, a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored), Burrill (2-for-5, two runs scored) and Ramos (2-for-4 HR, two RBI) all finished with multi-hit games to lead the Eagles offense.
  • Nate Edelman (1-0) pitched 5.0 innings of no hit baseball to earn the win as he came on in relief for the Eagles. Edelman finished with six strikeouts for the Eagles. After pitching the final 1.2 innings of game one, Zickert made the start in game two and allowed five runs on six hits while striking out four in 4.0 innings.   
  • UW-Stout finished the second game with five runs on six hits and two walks. 
  • Luke Carrier (1-3) made the start for the Blue Devils as he allowed six runs on five hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of work. 
  • Tunison led UW-Stout offensively as finished 2-for-4 with a HR and  3 RBIs. Pustelnik drove in two runs as he finished 1-for-3.
