The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team is in third place after the first day of action at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Indoor Championships Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.

2026 NCAA III INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP BASICS
  • Team Results - UWL is in third place with 24 points. UW-Oshkosh is in first place with 38 points followed by Washington University (Mo.) in second (19.5 points). After UWL in third place, Rowan University (NJ) is in fourth with 14 points and State University of New York Geneseo in fifth (11 points).
  • Location - Birmingham Crossplex , Birmingham, Ala. (Hosted by Southern Athletic Association and the Birmingham CrossPlex)
  • UWL at NCAA III Championships - UWL has won an NCAA Division III record 21 indoor titles, including 14 of the past 22. The Eagles are attempting to defend their 2023, 2024 and 2025 National Championships. 
  • Up Next: Day two of the Championships gets underway at 10:30 a.m  Saturday morning.

Field Events
  • Weight Throw: With a throw of 62-01/2, Anthony Staryszak finishes fourth individually to earn his first NCAA All-America honor. Logan Powers finished 12th overall with a throw of 59-3. 
  • Pole Vault: Andrew Tumminaro finished 10th in the pole vault with a mark of 16-2 while Josh Brunner was 12th (16-2), Gaven Lange 17th (15-10) and Connor Boyle 19th (15-4 1/4).
  • Heptathlon - Nolan Seaberg and Bryant Yanke are both competing in the heptathlon. Day one of the heptathlon included the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump. With 2,817 points, Seaberg is in 10th place while Yanke is in 20th with 1,227.

    Track Events
  • 60-meter dash Preliminaries - Evan Maurud (6.79) and Landon Gaullun (6.85) would both compete in the 60-meter dash but not qualify for the finals. 
  • 60-meter hurdles Preliminaries - With the third fastest time (8.02) in the prelims, Luke Schroeder qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday. 
  • Mile Preliminaries - Jayden Zywicki would qualify for the finals on Saturday in the mile with a time of 4:11.47. Also compete in the mile prelims but not qualifying was Nash Merklein (4:17.69). 
  • 200-meter run Preliminaries - Schroeder would qualify for his second finals of the Championships as he finished in the top eight in the 200-meter run. Schroeder's time on Friday was 21.35. Maurud also ran in the 200 prelims, finishing with a time of 21.69. 
  • 400-meter run Preliminaries - Running the fastest time in the 400-meter run was Collin Conzemius with a time of 46.92). Conzemius will be looking for his first NCAA III national title and his second straight NCAA All-America honor. Chase Doornink also ran on Friday, finishing with a non-qualifying time of 48.12. 
  • 800-meter run Preliminaries - Eagles Cael Schoemann will have a chance to three-peat in the 800-meter run as he qualified for the finals on Saturday. Schoemann ran the second fastest prelim time on Friday with a time of 1:52.70. 
  • 5000-meter Final - Aidan Matthai picks up his third NCAA All-America honor in the 5,000-meter run as he finished second overall with a time of 14:03.55. Matthai also earned All-America honors in the 5K at the NCAA III Indoor Championships in 2024 and 2025. 
  • 4x400-meter Relay Preliminaries - The relay team of Doornink, Lucas Krause, Devin Williams and Andrew Hackbarth run the second fastest time of the prelims to qualify for the finals of the 4x400 meter relay. 
  • Distance Medley Relay Final - The relay team of Aidan Manning, Finn Patenaude, Tyler Heiman and Joey Sullivan broke a school record on a banked track in the distance medley relay to finish fifth and earn NCAA All-America honors. Their time of 9:46.98 breaks the school record of 9:56.88 on a banked track.
