Habberstad Breaks Own Record in Pole Vault at Guthrie Invite; Relay Sets Meet and Facility Record; UWL Wins 12 Events

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team hosted the Mark Guthrie Invitational Saturday at Hetzel Fieldhouse. No team scores were recorded.

UWL won 12 events on Saturday, including five field events. Maya Evans captured the triple jump (37-11 ½), Regan Scott the long jump (18-6), Ainsley Hansen the high jump (5-4 ¼), Madilyn Vander Sanden the shot put (46-1 ¼) and Madison Habberstad the pole vault (13-2 ½).

Habberstad broke her own school record (13-2 ¼) in the pole vault set last week. She also set a meet record, breaking the record of 12-8 set by UW-Milwaukee's Kate Watson in 2023.

The Eagles won seven track titles on Saturday. McKenna Sedlacek took the 60-meter dash (7.59), Anna Plautz the 200-meter dash (24.95) and Andie Otto the 400-meter dash (57.49).

Ali Thomas took the 800-meter run (2:15.86), Julia Zalewski the mile run (5:00.82) and Brooklyn Luebke the 3,000-meter run (9:52.88).

UWL also captured the 4x400-meter relay (3:50.26) with Otto, Sarah Grubbs, Macy Reybrock and Zoe Lain. The Eagles set a facility and meet record, breaking the Hetzel Fieldhouse record of 3:50.95 set by Winona State University (Minn.) in 2023 and the meet record of 3:52.90 set by Plautz, Anika Reiland, Otto and Morgan Jennings last season.

Other top-six finishes in the field events included Mackenzey Kronberg second (37-11 ¼) in the triple jump while Josie Blum was third (17-8 ¾) and Jenna Richgels fourth (17-5 ½) in the long jump. Madison McCullum placed second (5-4 ¼) and Erin Gluch tied for fourth (5-2 ¼) in the high jump.

Jackie Bergeron was second (12-6 ¾), Araceli De Leo Lopez third (12-6 ¾) and Nora Waddel tied for fourth (12-0 ¾) in the pole vault Saturday.

In the shot put, Addy Moseler was second (43-1 ½), Chloe Kessenich fourth (40-9 ½), Lydia Delene fifth (40-3 ½) and Jayden Roden sixth (40-0 ¾). Ella Puls placed third (54-10) and Roden sixth (49-11 ¾) in the weight throw.

UWL had the top-six finishers in the 60-meter dash. Along with Sedlacek winning the event, Julia Yang was second (7.62), Anna Plautz third (7.71), Makenna Zak fourth (7.73), Reiland fifth (7.74) and Taylor Molling sixth (7.75). Zak was third (25.13), Reiland fourth (25.17) and Yang sixth (25.72) in the 200-meter dash while Reybrock was third (58.06) in the 400-meter dash.

The Eagles had five of the top-six finishers in the mile run with Zalewski first, Becca Immer second (5:02.52), Madison Twarling third (5:03.92), Olivia Heilman fourth (5:13.42) and Rebecca Belany fifth (5:18.20).

Olivia Navin placed second (8.94), Megan Zemke third (9.05) and Amber Grosse fourth (9.11) in the 60-meter hurdles.

Kalli Vannieuwenhoven finished second (2:15.97), Annika Elliott third (2:16.18) and Kylie Stockton fourth (2:18.19) in the 800-meter run.

Guthrie was head men's track & field coach at UWL from 1988-2006, leading the Eagles to 22 NCAA Division III Championships.  UWL captured 12 indoor and 10 outdoor titles, sweeping the championships in 10 different seasons.  His peers in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Guthrie the Division III National Coach of the Year eight times and regional coach of the year on 11 different occasions.   

Under Guthrie's direction, UWL won 34 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles (16 indoor; 18 outdoor) as he was selected the league's coach of the year 16 times. He was named the WIAC Men's Track & Field All-Time Coach in conjunction with the conference's Centennial Celebration in 2012.  Guthrie was inducted into the inaugural 30-member WIAC Hall of Fame Class in 2012.  

He is a member of the UWL Wall of Fame and USTFCCCA Hall of Fame. Guthrie retired after three years as UWL's External Relations Coordinator in 2020 and is in his fourth season as an assistant men's track & field coach this year.
