Cold Shooting Night Tough To Overcome As Women's Basketball Falls To Nationally Ranked UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - An off shooting night for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Women's Basketball team was tough to over come as they fell 64-47 to #9 ranked UW-Whitewater.

National Rankings: UW-Whitewater is ranked ninth while UW-La Crosse is 23rd on this weeks National Collegiate Athletic Conference National Power Index. Both teams are also in the top-25 on this weeks D3hoops.com Top-25 poll with UW-Whitewater coming in at nine and UW-La Crosse 21st. 
Next Up: The Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 7 when they travel to Platteville to take on the Pioneers of UW-Platteville at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers defeated the Eagles 66-63 back on January 10th at Mitchell Hall.

 HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • Both teams would get off to a slow start as the game was tied 4-4 midway through the first quarter. Back-to-back baskets including a three-pointer by Bri McCurdy would give UW-Whitewater a 9-4 lead with 3:55 on the clock. The Eagles then scored seven unanswered including five from Aaliyah Hamilton to take an 11-9 lead (1:44). After two Warhawk free throws tied the game, UWL scored the final four points of the first quarter to lead 15-11. 
  • UWL would stretch their first half lead to 21-15 on a layup by Lindsey Knuth before UW-Whitewater scored six straight to tie it at 21-21 (4:06). The two teams would trade baskets the rest of the first half as UW-Whitewater led 27-25 at halftime. 
  • After UW-Whitewater took a 33-27 lead with 6:52 left in the third quarter, Madisyn Kilboten hit a three-pointer for the Eagles to the deficit 33-30. The Warhawks would then close the third quarter 18-3 run to lead 51-33 heading into the final quarter.
  • UW-Whitewater would take its largest lead of the game at 54-33 on their first possession of the fourth quarter and UWL would not get any closer than 14 (60-44) the rest of the way.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 17-of-64 (26.6%) from the floor including four-of-29 (13.8%) from the three-point line. UWL was also nine-of-12 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
  • Grace Knupp and Jenna Welsch led the Eagles with eight points while Hamilton added seven points of the bench.
  • Malia Nelson finished with a game high 10 rebounds while Molly Janke grabbed seven to help give the Eagles a slight 40-39 advantage in rebounding. 
  • UW-Whitewater would shoot 22-of-53 (41.5%) from the floor including four-of-12 (33.3%) from the three-point line. The Warhawks were also 16-of-20 (80.00%) from the free throw line. 
  • Mia Gillis led the Warhawks with 16 points and seven rebounds while Brooke Stenklyft added 12 points.
