Women's Basketball Falls To UW-Platteville In WIAC Matchup

Jenna Welsch leads the Eagles with 12 points and nine rebounds
Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball fell to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe UW-Platteville 65-55 on Saturday afternoon.

Records: UWL 13-8 (6-4 WIAC), UW-River Falls 17-4 (7-3 WIAC)
National Rankings: UW-Platteville is ranked 21st while UW-La Crosse is 23rd on this weeks National Collegiate Athletic Conference National Power Index. Both teams are also in the top-25 on this weeks D3hoops.com Top-25 poll with UW-Platteville coming in at 21st and UW-La Crosse 22nd.  
Next Up: The Eagles will stay on the road for their next game as they travel to Menomonie, Wis. to take on the Blue Devils of UW-Stout. Tip-off is schedule for 7 p.m. UWL defeated UW-Stout 80-73 back on January 21st in La Crosse. In that game, Malia Nelson scored a career high 24 points and led the Eagles with eight rebounds and four assists.

 HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • After the Pioneers scored the first five points of the game, the Eagles scored seven unanswered to lead 7-5 with 5:40 left in the first quarter. UW-Platteville would then close the opening with a 11-4 run to lead 16-11 headed into the second quarter. 
  • The Pioneers would continue their run as they scored the first four point of the second quarter to take a 21-11 lead with 7:38 left in the half. A layup by Jenna Welsch would with 3:09 remaining in the first half cut the Eagles deficit to 24-22. Ashley Weir's three-pointer with :22 remaining put the Pioneers up 34-25 at halftime. 
  • UW-Platteville would take its largest lead of the game (47-29) as they scored 13 of the first 17 points of the third quarter. UWL would not go down quietly though as they slowly chipped away at their deficit by going on a 17-4 run including 10 straight at one point to trail 51-46 at the end of the third quarter. 
  • Trailing 57-50 in the fourth quarter, UWL would a layup followed by two free throws from Welsch to make it a four point (58-54) game with 4:12 remaining. That would be as close as the Eagles would get as the Pioneers scored seven of the final eight points to seal the win. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 19-of-60 (31.7%) from the floor including two-of-17 (11.8%) from the three-point line. UWL was also 15-of-21 (71.4%) from the free throw line.
  • Welsch led the Eagle offense with 12 points while Grace Knupp added 10 points. 
  • Madisyn Kilboten and Malia Nelson each chipped in eight points for the Eagles.
  • Welsch finished with a team high nine rebounds while Knupp had eight to help give UWL a 37-33 advantage on the glass. 
  • UW-Platteville would shoot 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the floor including five-of-13 (38.5%) from the three-point line. The Pioneers were also eight-of-17 (47.1%) from the free throw line. 
  • Ella Mackiewicz led the Pioneers with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Weir added 13 points.
