Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track and field team leads after the first day of action Friday night at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship (presented by Culver's) hosted by UW-Platteville at Williams Fieldhouse.
The Eagles lead with 146.0 points while UW-Eau Claire is second with 34.25 and UW-Platteville third with 29.0. UW-Oshkosh is in fourth-place (28.0) followed by UW-Stevens Point (27.0), UW-Whitewater (16.25), UW-Stout (16.0) and UW-River Falls (15.5).
UWL scored 59.0 points in the jumps events on Friday while compiling 37.0 distance points and 25.0 sprints points. The team also secured 17.0 points in the throws and 8.0 in relays.
UWL is seeking its sixth straight title and 12th in 13 years. The Eagles have won a league record 31 championships (1978-81, 1983, 1985-87, 1994, 1997, 2000-05, 2007-10, 2013-18, 2020, 2022-25).
The Eagles won four individual titles on Friday as
Regan Scott took the long jump (18-9 1/2),
Madilyn Vander Sanden the shot put (46-4 1/4),
Anna Plautz the 400-meter dash (56.68) and
Molly Novotny the 5,000-meter run (17:10.71).
Scott is the first UWL student-athlete to win the long jump since Maddie Hansen in 2023. Vander Sanden won her second straight shot put crown, becoming the first since teammate Skye Digman in 2020 and 2022. The 2021 championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 public health threat. Plautz is the first sprinter in the WIAC to win back-to-back titles in the 400-meter dash since Liz Kooistra from UW-Eau Claire in 2008-09. Novotny captured the 5,000-meter championship for UWL for the first time since
Katelyn Chadwick in 2024.
UWL had five of the top-six finishers in the long jump on Friday. Along with Scott's first-place finish,
Maya Evans was second (18-8 1/2),
Jenna Richgels fourth (18-3 1/4),
Ava Foley fifth (18-3 1/4) and
Jenna Miller sixth (18-2 1/2).
Lydia Delene finished fifth (44-0 3/4), Jaydn Roden seventh (43-3 3/4) and
Addy Moseler eighth (42-2) in the shot put.
In Friday's high jump,
Izzy Bender finished fifth (5-3) with
Ainsley Hansen sixth (5-3).
Erin Gluch and
Madison McCullum tied for eighth (5-1).
The Eagles finished with five of the top-eight in the pole vault, led by
Madison Habberstad placing second (13-0 1/4).
Araceli De Leo Lopez was third (12-10 1/4),
Nora Waddell fourth (12-2 1/2),
Amanda VanCalster seventh (12-2 1/2) and
Jackie Bergeron eighth (12-2 1/2).
On the track,
Andie Otto was second (57.33) in the 400-meter dash while
Macy Reybrock placed third (57.52) and
Zoe Lain eighth (58.40).
UWL's
Madison Twarling placed fourth (5:05.31) in the mile run while
Becca Immer was sixth (5:05.98) and
Julia Zalewski eighth (5:11.11).
Brooklyn Luebke finished second (17:17.50) in the 5,000-meter run with
Lucile Duchac third (17:39.56) and
Milana Pisto fifth (17:54.40).
The Eagles' distance medley relay of
Nora Jillson,
Grace Kern,
Natasha Tiry and
Bryn Sato placed second (12:17.54).
In preliminary track action, four sprinters advanced to the 60-meter hurdles final with Scott (8.85),
Olivia Navin (8.91),
Megan Zemke (8.94) and
Brie Eckerman (9.18). Scott recorded the fastest qualifying time while Navin was second, Zemke fourth and Eckerman seventh.
Five student-athletes in the 60-meter dash advanced to Saturday's final, including
Makenna Zak (7.56),
Julie Yang (7.60),
McKenna Sedlacek (7.66),
Anika Reiland (7.68) and
Taylor Molling (7.70). Zak had the second-fastest qualifying time with Yang third, Sedlacek fourth, Reiland fifth and Molling sixth.
