Eagles in First After Day 1 of WIAC Indoor Championships; Win Three Individual Titles and A Relay Championship

Eagles take top six spots in the mile including Joey Sullivan winning the title.

Results

Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Men's Track and Field team completed day one of the 2026 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championships (presented by Culver's) which included the Eagles winning three individual championships and one relay title.

THE BASICS

Team Results: UWL leads the team standings with 118 points while UW-Oshkosh is in second with 59 points. In third place is UW-Stevens Point with 23 points while UW-Eau Claire is in fourth (20points), UW-Platteville, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater tied for fifth (16 points) and UW-River Falls eighth (5 points).

FIELD EVENTS

Shot Put– Scoring for the Eagles in the shot put was Jake Gardner who finished fifth overall with a mark of 54-8.75.
Pole Vault – UWL finished with four athletes in the top seven in the pole vault led by Andrew Tuminnaro who finished second with a mark of 16-5 while Connor Boyle was third (16-3), Gaven Lange fourth (15-9) and Josh Brunner seventh (15-9).
Long Jump - UWL finished with three of the top eight finishers in the long jump led by Carter Pearson who finished third overall with a jump of 23-4 3/4. In fifth place was Sebastian Jefferson (23-0 1/2) while Triton Schmidt finished eighth (22-6).
Heptathlon - On day one of the heptathlon, UWL has three competitors in the top eight including Nolan Seaberg in fourth (2885), Trent Backeberg in sixth (2749) and Bryant Yanke in eighth (2711).

TRACK EVENTS

60-meter hurdles – In the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, Luke Schroeder broke the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III record with a time of 7.67. Schroeder's time breaks the previous mark of 7.72 which was set by Jamir Brown of Rowan University (December 6, 2024). Schroeder will have the opportunity on Saturday to win his third indoor WIAC title as he also won the event in 2023 and 2024.
60-meter dash – Three Eagles qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash including Schroeder (6.78), Landon Gallun (6.84) and Ryder Smith (6.86).
Mile – UWL had the top six finishers in the mile with Joey Sullivan winning the event with a time of 4:10.69 followed by Jayden Zywicki (4:10.78), Aidan Manning (4:11.49), Nash Merklein (4:11.79), Nico Castellanos (4:12.56) and Chase Altergott (4:14.25). The event win for Sullivan is his first WIAC Indoor Championship in the mile.

400-meter run – Collin Conzemius defended his 2025 WIAC Indoor Championship in the 400-meter run on Friday with a winning time of 47.44. His time broke the WIAC Indoor Championship meet record as well as set the facility record. Also scoring points for the Eagles was Chase Doornink who finished third overall with a time of 48.30.
5000-meter run – Aidan Matthai broke the WIAC Indoor Championship meet record to win the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:22.02 . Also finishing in the top eight for the Eagles was Charles Vater in fourth (14:34.73). Next for the Eagles was Owen Clark in fifth place with a time of 14:38.75 while Declan Gregg finished eighth in a time of 14:56.52.
Distance Medley: The relay team of Parker Heintz, Zachary Nyquist, Ethan Eilertson and Aiden Jakubic won a WIAC title in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:09.46.
