Women's Basketball Upsets #7 Ranked UW-Whitewater; Nelson, Knupp And Janke Lead The Way

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Women's Basketball team knocked off #7 ranked UW-Whitewater 77-54 on Wednesday night at Kachel Gymnasium.

Top 10 Eagle Wins: This is just the Eagles sixth win over a D3hoops.com Top-25 ranked opponent as they are now 6-24 all-time. D3hoops.com released their first poll prior to the 1999-2000.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • The Eagles would score the first five points of the game before the Warhawks scored seven of the next nine points to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:15 left in the first quarter. After Jenna Welsch hit two free throws for UWL, UW-Whitewater quickly scored the next five points to lead 12-9. Molly Janke would give the Eagles a 13-12 lead before the Warhawks were able to take a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
  • UW-Whitewater opened the second quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 22-16 lead and force a UWL timeout with 7:51 left in the quarter. The Eagles would tie the game at 24-24 (4:40) as they went on a 8-2 run of their own capped off by a three-pointer by Grace Knupp. Logan Lowry tip in basket gave the Warhawks a 29-24 lead with 3:45 remaining but UWL scored eight of the final 11 points of the half to tie the game 32-32 at halftime. Katie Waukau sparked the Eagles run with her three-pointer while Malia Nelson ended the half by makinging three-of-four free throws. 
  • The two teams would trade the lead back and fourth to start the third quarter until the game was tied at 44-44 (4:11). UWL would then go on a 12-3 run to lead 56-47 at the end of the third quarter. Janke and Ellie Schiszik hit back-to-back three-pointers to jump start the Eagles run. 
  • UWL would hold UW-Whitewater to just seven points in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for their biggest win of the season so far. UWL scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 66-47 with 5:45 remaining in the game. Five players would score a basket during the 10-point run. Caden Krohn's layup would cut the Warhawks defict to 70-52 but UWL would quickly score seven unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at 77-52 with :12 remaining.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 27-of-54 (50%) from the floor including six-of-16 (37.5%) from the three-point line. UWL was also 17-of-21 (81.0%) from the free throw line.
  • Nelson led the Eagles with 17 points while Knupp finished with 16 points and three assists.
  • Janke added 12 points and a game high eight rebounds while Welsch chipped in nine.
  • UWL finished with a 37-33 advantage on the boards. 
  • UW-Whitewater would shoot 20-of-62 (32.3%) from the floor including three-of-19 (15.8%) from the three-point line. The Warhawks were also 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the free throw line. 
  • Mia Gillis led the Warhawks with 12 points while Caden Krohn added nine points off the bench.
