Eagles Come From Behind To Advance To NCAA III Regional Championship; Rajkovich Delivers Winning Hit

Owen Deprez pitches 4.2 innings of relief to earn the win on the mound
Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team came from behind to score four runs in their final two at-bats to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scipps (Calif.) in the winners bracket of the National Collegiate Athletic College (NCAA) III Regional Saturday afternoon.

  • NCAA La Crosse Regional: UW-La Crosse is the top seed in the regional while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the #3 seed. 
  • Up Next: UWL advances to the NCAA III Regional Championship for the third straight season and will face the winner of #2 seed Buena Vista University (Iowa) and #3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scrips at 11 a.m. on Sunday. UWL will need to be beaten twice to be eliminated.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Witte put the Eagles on the scoreboard first with his fourth home run of the season for the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • The Stags would get that run back plus one in the top of the second inning as Carter Bennett hit a two-run home run for the 2-1 lead.
  • With one out in the third inning, Alex Henderseon hit his fourth home run in two games to extend the Stags lead to 3-1. 
  • Bennett led off the fourth inning with his second home run of the game to make it 4-1 Stags.
  • In the fifth inning, the Stags would add two more runs on a double by Bennett to make it 6-1. 
  • UWL would start its comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning as Anthony Vivian hit a one out double followed by a Luke Walton home run to cut the Eagles deficit to 6-3. 
  • In the sixth inning, Chris VandenHeuvel led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. VandenHeuvel would move to third on a George Seaman ground out while Mac Born drove in VandenHeuvel to make it 6-4. 
  • The in the bottom of the seventh inning and one out, Andrew Rajkovich walked and stole second base. After Calvin Hargrove moved Rajkovich to third on a ground out, VandenHeuvel singled to score Rajkovich (6-5). 
  • The Eagles would complete the come back in the eighth inning scoring three runs on two hits. With one out, Born walked and moved to third on Jack Olver's double. Vivian was then hit by a pitch to lead the bases. Walton would tie the game with an RBI ground out to first base. Rajkovich would then single to center field to give UWL the 8-6 lead. 
  • Relief pitcher Owen Deprez would then retire the Stags in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Eagles.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with eight runs on nine hits and two walks.
  • Rajkovich (1-for-3, walk, two RBIs and a run scored), VandenHeuvel (2-for-4, RBI), and Walton (1-for-4, HR, three RBI) led the Eagles offense.
  • Deprez (6-1) came on in relief to pitch the final 4.2 innings to earn the win on the mound. Deprez allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out seven. AJ Curtis made the start for the Eagles as he allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out one. 
  • The Stags finished with six runs on nine hits and six walks. 
  • Bennett led the Stags offense as he finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
  • Parker McGraw (5-2) suffered the loss for the Stags as he came on in relief and allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.
