Baseball Splits WIAC Doubleheader With UW-Platteville; Witte Reaches WIAC Stolen Base Milestone

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team earned a doubleheader split with UW-Platteville on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UWL got off to a fast start in game one as they hit three home runs to take the early 5-0 lead. Chris VandenHeuvel led off the bottom of the first inning with his fourth home run of the season. Nate Witte and George Seaman then each walked and advanced to second/third base with a double steal. Anthony Vivian would then hit his fifth home run of the season to put UWL up 4-0. After a ground out, Jack Olver hit the third home run of the inning to put the Eagles up 5-0. 
  • The second inning saw another home run as George Seaman hit a 3-run home run to give UWL an 8-0 lead. Seaman's home run scored VandenHeuvel who walked and Witte who had reached on a fielders choice. 
  • Brady Katterhagen would put the Pioneers on the scoreboard as led off the top of the third innings with a a solo home run.
  • In the Eagles half of the third inning, Olver led off with a single and advanced to third on Mac Born's double. Olver would then score on Cam Dupont's single to make it 9-1. Emiliano Ramos would then drive in Born with his single while Witte's sacrifice fly scored Dupont to extend UWL's lead to 11-1. Ramos would then score on Vivian's single to make it 12-1. 
  • UW-Platteville's Danny Hodel hit a double in the sixth inning that scored Caleb Parker who had reached on a single to cut the deficit to 12-2.
  • UWL would get that run back in their half of the sixth inning as James Rae drove in a run with a double. Rae's double scored Jack Peterson who had reached with a single of his own. 
  • The Pioneers would score the final run of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Parker.

    Game Two
  • UW-Platteville would threaten in the top of the second inning as they put two runners on with one out; however, Eagle starting pitcher Owen Anderson would induce an inning ending double play to end the threat.
  • Olver would give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with his second home run of the day. 
  • The Pioneers would take a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning as they scored three runs on four hits and two errors. With two outs, Trinity Beland singled and advanced to third on a throwing error. Beland then tied the game at 1 when he scored on a wild pitch. Parker then reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on Jake Wegner's single. Anthony Massa then doubled to score to score Parker. Danny Hodel then singled to score Wegner. 
  • The Eagles would get a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vivian led of the inning by reaching via a hit batsman and advanced to second on Andrew Rajkovich's single. Olver then moved Rajkovich and Eli Roberts, who pinch ran for Vivian, to second and third base with his sacrifice bunt. Born then brought Roberts in with his sacrifice fly to cut the Eagles deficit to 3-2. 
  • UWL would threaten in the ninth inning as Keegan Fleischman led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But that would be as far as Fleischman would get on the bases as Pioneer relief pitcher Brayden Schimmel would record two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 13 runs on 12 hits and four walks. 
  • Seaman led the Eagles offense finishing 2-for-2 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored while VandenHeuvel was 1-for-1 with two walks and a home run.
  • Vivian finished 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and a run scored. 
  • Daelen Johnson (1-0) earned his first win of the season as he allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out four in 5.0 innings of work. 
  • The Pioneers scored three runs on six hits and two walks.
  • Parker led UW-Platteville offensively as he finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Matthew Carlson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Pioneers as he allowed four runs on two hits and two walks in 0.0 innings. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with two runs on nine hits and one walk in game two.
  • Olver finished game two 2-for-3 with a home run.
  • Witte recorded his second stolen base of the day in game two which was his 100th stolen base of his collegiate career. Already the WIAC stolen base record holder, Witte is the first player in WIAC history to reach the 100 mark. Witte recorded 63 stolen bases in three seasons at WIAC member UW-Eau Claire before transferring to UW-La Crosse where he has another 37 in his two years. 
  • Mitchel Fassbender (1-1) suffered the loss as the allowed three unearned runs on three hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings of relief. Owen Anderson started the game for the Eagles as pitched 6.0 innings and allowed four hits while striking out six. 
  • The Pioneers finished with three runs on eight hits and one walk. 
  • Schimmel (2-0) pitched the final 4.0 innings to earn the win for the Pioneers as he allowed one run on three hits while striking out three. 
  • Massa led the Pioneers offense by finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.
