Baseball Wins Big In Game One, Wins Game Two In Extra Innings; VandenHeuvel Three Home Runs

River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team completed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) series sweep with two more wins over UW-River Falls Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • Chris VandenHeuvel led off the game with his sixth home run of the season to give UWL the early 1-0 lead. 
  • With one out in the second inning, Calvin Hargrove doubled and scored on Mac Born's double for the 2-0 lead. Then with two outs, VandenHeuvel gave UWL a 3-0 lead with a double that scored Born. 
  • UW-River Falls would cut their deficit to 3-2 with a two out single that drove in two runs by JV Castillo.
  • Emiliano Ramos doubled to left field to start the fourth inning and scored on Hargroves second double to make it 4-2 Eagles. Born followed that up with his fifth home run of the year to make it 6-2. 
  • In the Falcons half of the fourth inning, UW-River Falls scored three runs on four hits to pull within 6-5. Kale Twombly drove in a run with a single while Tanner Hraby brought in two runs with a single. 
  • UWL would get two of those runs back in the fifth inning as Jack Olver and Andrew Rajkovich opened the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to extend UWL's lead to 8-5.
  • With his second home run of the day, VandenHeuvel gave UWL a 9-5 lead. Anthony Vivian and George Seaman followed the home run with back-to-back doubles to make it 10-5 while Rajkovich's ground out scored Seaman to put UWL up 11-5. 
  • Rajkovich would join VandenHeuvel in the multi-home run game in the eighth inning which brought home Olver who had reached on a two out double to make it 13-5.
  • The Eagles would add four more runs on three hits in the ninth inning for the final score of 17-5. VandenHeuvel drove in his fourth run of the game with a single while Olver's base clearing double scored three runs to give him four RBIs as well. 

    Game Two
  • The Eagles would score two runs in their first at bat to take an early 2-0 lead in game two. VandenHeuvel walked to lead off the game and advanced to second when Keegan Fleischman was hit by a pitch. Fleischman and VandenHeuvel moved up a base on Seaman's ground out. VandenHeuvel would then score on a sacrifice fly by Rajkovich while Fleischman came into score on Born's single to center field.
  • With one out in the top of the third inning, Seaman hit his team leading 12th home run of the season to put UWL up 3-0. Rajkovich would then walk and Olver hit his second home run of the day to make it 5-0. 
  • The top of the fourth inning would start the same way as the third inning for the Eagles as Nate Witte would hit a one out solo home run to extend UWL's lead to 6-0. VandenHeuvel followed that with his third home run of the day to make it 7-0. 
  • Andrew Athmann would put the Falcons on the scoreboard in their half of the fourth inning with a two-run home run to cut their deficit to 7-2. 
  • UWL would get single runs in the fifth and sixth inning as they took a 9-2 lead. Olver would walk with one out in the fifth and advance to third on a single by Born. Born would then steal second base and Olver would come home to score on a throwing error on the play. Witte doubled in the sixth, advanced to third on a VandenHeuvel fly out and score on Fleishmans ground out.
  • The Falcons would cut their deficit to 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth as JV Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to score a run while John Santelman hit a three-run home run. 
  • An RBI single by Tanner Hraby in the bottom of the seventh brought UW-River Falls to with in 9-7.
  • The Falcons would take their first lead of the four game series in the eighth inning as they scored three runs on three hits to take a 10-9 lead. Max Stocco drove in a run with a double while Max Krebs double scored two more runs for the Falcons. 
  • Pinch hitter Luke Walton would double to lead off the top of the ninth inning for the Eagles. Brady Burrill would pinch run for Walton and advance to third on Seamans ground out to the pitcher. After a strikeout, Olver singled up the middle to score Burrill and tie the game at 10. 
  • Relief pitcher Mitchel Fassbender would work a clean ninth inning to force extra innings. 
  • With two outs in the top of the 10th inning and Witte on second base after being hit by a pitch and advancing on a ground out, Seaman singled to right field to score Witte and put the Eagles up 11-10. Rajkovich followed with a doulbe to center field which scored Seaman to make it 12-10. Olver would move Rajkovich to third when he reached on an error. Born then made it 13-10 with his RBI single that scored Rajkovich for the final run of the game. 
  • Fassbender would strikout out three Falcons around a one out walk in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win for the Eagles.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 17 runs on 18 hits and four walks. 
  • VandenHeuvel (4-for-6, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, 2 runs score) and Olver (4-for-6, HR, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored) led the Eagles offense.
  • Also leading the offensive explosion was Rajkovich (2-for-5, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) and Born (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored). 
  • Caleb Matl (2-0) came on in relief to earn the win as he gave up just one hit and struck out three in 3.2 innings of work. Isaiah Katz made the start for the Eagles and went 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk. 
  • The Falcons finished with five runs on nine hits and one walk. 
  • Shaun Gavin (2-3) suffered the loss for the Falcons as he allowed eight runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out three in 5.0 innings. 
  • Castillo led UW-River Falls offense as he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with 13 runs on 14 hits and eight walks in game two. 
  • The Eagles had five batters finish with at least two hits including Seaman (2-for-6, HR, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored), Rajkovich (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored), Olver (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored), Born (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) and Witte (2-for-4, HR, 3 runs scored). 
  • Fassbender (2-1) pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn the win for the Eagles as he did not give up a hit while walking two and striking out five. Owen Deprez started the game for the Eagles as he allowed five runs on three hits and five walks while striking out five in 5.0 innings. 
  • The Falcons finished with 10 runs on nine hits and eight walks.
  • EJ Kuster (1-4) suffered the loss for the Falcons as he allowed four runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of relief. Brett Sullivan made the start for UW-River Falls as he went 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three. 
  • Krebs (2-for5, 2 RBIs), Santelman (1-5, HR, 3 RBIs) and Athmann (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored) led the Falcons offense.
