Baseball Drops Doubleheader With Top Ranked UW-Whitewater

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team dropped a doubleheader with #1 ranked UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • Chris VandenHeuvel would give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead as he led off the game with a solo home run 
  •  Adam Cootway's RBI single in the bottom of the first inning would tie the game at 1 while Matt Scolans RBI single in the second inning put UW-Whitewater up 2-1. 
  • Nate Witte led off the third inning with a single and advanced to third on VandenHeuvel's single. Anthony Vivian then drove in Witte with a single to tie the game at 2.
  • UW-Whitewater would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning as they scored two runs on four hits. Sam Paden and Dominik McVay each drove in a run for the Warhawks with singles. 
  • The Warhawks would add five runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 9-2. Andy Thies and Darryl Jackson would each hit 2-run home runs while McVay hit a solo home run to account for all five runs. 
  • After the Warhawks added two runs in the fifth inning to lead 11-2, UWL would get a run in the sixth inning as Jack Olver singled and came around to scored on Emiliano Ramos' double.
  • A Mac Born ground out would score VandenHeuvel who had reached on a fielding error to make it 11-4 in the seventh inning.
  • UW-Whitewater would score their final run of the game on an RBI single by Jackson Spring in bottom half of the seventh inning. 
  • UWL would score two runs in the ninth inning as Born drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Olver drove in a run with a double to make it 12-6.

    Game Two
  • Unlike the first three games of the series neither team was able to score any runs over the first three innings.
  • The Warhawks would break through first in the bottom of the fourth inning as Eli Frank hit a solo home run.
  • UWL would get the run back in the fifth inning as Jack Olver doubled to lead of the inning and advanced to third on Eli Roberts single to right. Olver then scored to tie the game when Keegan Fleischman grounded into a double play.
  • Frank would hit his second home run of the game in the sixth inning to give UW-Whitewater a 2-1 lead.
  • The Eagles would even the score in the seventh inning as Olver walked and advanced to third on Luke Walton's pinch hit single. Then with one out, a Ramos pinch hit single to score Olver and tie the score at 2.
  • A one out double by Matt Scolan in the bottom of the seven inning would score Aaron Holland who had reached with a single to put the Warhawks up 3-2.
  • Jackson would put UWL up 4-2 with a solo home run in the eighth inning for the final runs of the game.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with six runs on 11 hits and two walks. 
  • VandenHeuvel led the Eagles offense as he finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Ramos was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
  • Chayce Osterhaus (4-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed nine runs on 14 hits while striking out three in 3.2 innings of work. 
  • UW-Whitewater finished with 12 runs on 24 hits and one walk.
  • Logan Eisenbarth (2-0) earned the win for the Warhawks as went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Danny Hopper (1) pitched the final three innings to earn the save. 
  • McVay (4-for-5, home run, three RBIs) and Paden (4-for-5, four runs and two RBIs) led the offense for UW-Whitewater. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with two runs on eight hits and one walk in game two.
  • Olver finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and a double. The double was Olver's 67th of his Eagle career which breaks the WIAC record for doubles. Olver passes Jeff Donovan who played at UW-Whitewater from 2007-08 and 2010-11.
  • Seaman went 3-for-4.
  • AJ Curtiss (2-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed three runs on sevens hits and a walk while striking out five in 6.1 innings.
  • The Warhawks scored four runs on nine hits and one walk.
  • Brady Malkow (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he pitched 1.2 innings and allowing 1 hit while striking out two. Jack Hagen (1) earned the save as he pitched a clean nine inning.
  • Eli Frank led UW-Whitewater in game two as he finished 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and two RBIs.
