UWL Concludes Home Schedule with Win over UW-Stevens Point; Completes Undefeated WIAC Dual Season

 The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team completed its 2024-25 home schedule with a 43-3 victory over UW-Stevens Point Friday night in Mitchell Hall.

The Eagles, third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Team Dual rankings, improve to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UWL is first in the NWCA Tournament rankings.
 
The Pointers drop to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the WIAC.
 
With the victory, UWL improves to 87-9 all-time in WIAC duals under head coach Dave Malecek. The Eagles extended their league winning streak to 16 duals with Friday's victory. UWL has recorded seven undefeated (5-0) conference duals seasons in the last nine years with Malecek.
 
UWL now leads the all-timer series, 47-26, with UW-Stevens Point. The Eagles have won the last 22 meetings with the Pointers.
 
UW-Stevens Point took a 3-0 lead at 125-pounds with Blaze Thurber earning a win by decision (10-5) over Thomas Giere.

Leo Draveling won at 174-pounds.
The Eagles took the next nine matches, including five by technical fall, three by major decision and one by fall.
 
Cael Weinzweig gave UWL a 4-3 lead with a major decision (10-1) over Aidan Foster at 133-pounds. Talan Schutte's win by fall (1:36) over Oscar Estrada at 141-pounds extended the lead to 10-3.
 
UWL's Josh Cherba started a streak of four consecutive wins by technical fall with a victory (15-0, 2:19) over Maddox Rye at 149-pounds. Tyler Goebel, ranked fourth in the NWCA, followed with a technical fall (18-1, 4:18) over Dylan Cariveau at 157-pounds to make it 20-3. Third-ranked Tate Flege won by technical fall (18-0, 7:00) over Josh Heuss at 165-pounds and the Eagles' Leo Draveling won by technical fall (18-1, 5:59) over Bryce Buchanan at 174.
 
At 184-pounds, UWL's third-ranked Marcus Orlandoni made it 34-3 with a major decision (10-2) over Easton Hull. Second-ranked Ben Kawczynski at 197-pounds earned a major decision (9-0) over Logan Neitzel to give the Eagles a 38-3 lead.  
Marcus Orlandoni earned the victory at 184-pounds.


Top-ranked Michael Douglas concluded the dual with a technical fall (23-6, 6:59) at 285-pounds over Blake Flach.
 
 UWL returns to action Saturday, February 8 at the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Invitational at 10 a.m.
