Eagles in First After Day 1 of WIAC Indoor Championships; Win Two Individual Titles

Eagles take home top four spots in 5000 meter run

- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Men's Track and Field team completed day one of the 2025 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championships (presented by Culver's) which included the Eagles winning two individual championships.
 
THE BASICS
  • Team Results: UWL leads the team standings with 110 points while UW-Whitewater is in second with 35 points. In third place is UW-Eau Claire with 33 points while UW-Oshkosh is in fourth (30.5 points), UW-Stevens Points fifth (27 points), UW-Stout sixth (18.5 points), UW-Platteville seventh (17 points) and UW-River Falls eighth (2 points. 
  • Location: Skyward Fieldhouse, Stevens Point, Wis.
  • Up next: Day two of the WIAC Indoor Championships will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

FIELD EVENTS
  • Pole Vault – UWL had five of the top eight spots, led by Andrew Tumminaro placing second with a season high mark of 16-5 1/4 while Caleb Moore finished third (15-7 1/4), JT Zell fourth (15-7 1/4), Gaven Lange seventh (15-1 1/2), and Connor Boyle placed eighth (14-7 1/2).
  • Long Jump – The Eagles secured two of the top five spots in the long jump with Carter Pearson placing third (23-8 1/4) and Andrew Hermes finishing fifth (22-8 1/2).

    TRACK EVENTS 
  • 60-meter hurdles – Two Eagle's qualified for tomorrow's 60-meter hurdles final with Aaron Poelma running the fastest time (8.20) and Lukas Johnson qualified eighth (8.37).
  • 60-meter dashSam Blaskowski was the lone Eagle to qualify for tomorrow's 60-meter dash final as he once again broke his own National Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCAA) III record with a time of 6.60. Blaskowki had set the record at 6.62 earlier this season.
  • Mile – Four of the top seven finishers were Eagles with Jayden Zywicki placing fourth (4:18.05), Nash Merklein fifth (4:19.39), Christopher Wolfe sixth (4:20.07), and Nico Castellanos seventh (4:20.44).
  • 400-meter run – UWL had four of the top six finishers including Collin Conzemius winning his first WIAC title with a time of 48.75. Finishing second was Chase Doornink (48.90) while Andrew Hackbarth finished fifth (49.36) and Jacob Hohman sixth (49.56).
  • 5000-meter run – The Eagles captured five of the top six spots in the 5000 meter run with Grant Matthai winning a WIAC championship as he ran a facility and meet record time of 14:24.14. Aidan Matthai placed second (14:31.20) while  Adam Loenser was third (14:34.77), Charles Vater fourth (14:40.29), and Corey Fairchild sixth (14:49.31).
  • Distance Medley: The relay team of Owen Klaus, Ayden Hart, Jayden Sayles and Owen Layton placed second with a time of 10:19.23.
