Eagles Knock Off Nationally Ranked UW-Stout; Four Players In Double Figures

Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball knocked of nationally ranked UW-Stout 84-76 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Next Up: The WIAC will take a bye from action this weekend and the Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, February 5 when they host UW-Platteville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mitchell Hall.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • Ali Sprangers opened the scoring with a jumper and UWL built an early 12-7 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter. Sprangers would score six of the Eagles first 12 points. The Blue Devils would go on a 10-0 run to take a 17-12 lead with 1:15 left. A Kailee Meeker jumper ended the run as UWL trailed 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. 
  • UW-Stout would extend their lead to 21-14 on a layup by Lexi Wagner with 7:18 on the clock. UWL would score six straight and 13 of the next 15 points to take a 27-23 lead with 1:43 left in the half. UW-Stout would tie it at 28 before Lauryn Milne hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 31-28 lead. A Anna Mutch jumper with :02 left would cut the Blue Devils deficit to 32-20 at halftime. 
  • The two teams would trade baskets until the game was tied at 38 with 6:42 left in the third quarter. The Eagles would then go on a 8-1 run to take a 46-39 lead midway through the quarter (5:01). Grace Knupp would score the first four points of the run for the Eagles. After UW-Stout cut it to 48-44, Milne would hit a three-pointer followed by a steal and a layup by Meeker to give UWL a 53-44 lead with 2:18 left. Amanda Giesen would pull the Blue Devils to within one (55-54) with :23 left in the third quarter; however, Meeker would hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 58-54 lead. 
  • The Eagles would take a 65-60 lead on a layup by Madisyn Kilboten with 3:33 left in the game. UW-Stout would hit four straight free throws to cut their deficit to 65-64 (2:33). Knupp would give the Eagles a 70-67 lead with a layup with :18 remaining. Wagner would then tie the game for the Blue Devils with :13 left. The Eagles would get one last chance but not convert as the game went ot overtime. 
  • UWL would take a 76-72 lead in overtime on a jumper by Sprangers with 2:39 on the clock. UW-Stout would tie it at 76 (2:26) but the Eagles would score the final eight points of the game to win 84-76. Meeker broke the tie with a jumper while Malia Nelson gave the Eagles an 81-76 lead with a three-pointer with :44 left. UWL would hit three-of-six from the free-throw line for their final three points of the game.

  • As a team, the Eagles finished 34-of-73 (46.6%) from the floor including five-of-22 (22.7%) from the three-point line. UWL was also 11-of-20 from the free throw line.
  • The Eagles finished with four players in double figures led by Milne with 17 points while Meeker and Knupp each had 16 and Sprangers finished with 11. 
  • Knupp also finished with a team high seven rebounds to go along with five steals and three assists. 
  • Milne, Nelson and Kilboten each six rebounds as UWL out rebounded UW-Stout 41-39. 
  • UW-Stout finished 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the floor including seven-of-24 (29.2%) from the three-point line. The Blue Devils were also 19-of-27 from the free throw line. 
  • Giesen led all scorers with 33 points while Mutch added 14 and Raegan Sorensen chipped in 10 for the Blue Devils.
