Third-Ranked Wrestling Team Drops Dual at Top-Ranked Augsburg

Ben Kawczynski earned a major decision over second-ranked Parker Venz.
Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top-25 Dual Poll, fell 19-13 at top-ranked Augsburg University (Minn.) Saturday afternoon in Si Melby Hall.
 
The Eagles drop to 10-2 on the season while the Auggies improve to 13-0.

The dual featured 14 ranked wrestlers by the NWCA, including five matches with both wrestlers ranked. 
 
Augsburg (Minn.) took a 3-0 lead at 125-pounds as 12th-ranked Wyatt Kaczrowski won by decision (9-4) over 10th-ranked Quintin Wolbert. The Auggies extended their lead to 6-0 as Chance Suddeth won by decision (10-6) over the Eagles' Wyatt Magolski.

UWL got on the board at 141-pounds as 10th-ranked Sam Lorenz won by decision (8-3) over Austin Gabbert.
 
Eleventh-ranked Matthew Randolph gave Augsburg (Minn.) a 10-3 lead with a major decision (9-0) over UWL's Josh Cherba at 149-pounds.
 
In match-up of top-five ranked wrestlers at 157-pounds, UWL's Tyler Goebel won by decision (2-0) over Karsen Otis. Goebel is ranked fifth at 165-pounds by the NWCA while Otis is ranked fourth.
 
The 165-pound match on Saturday included a pair of top-three ranked wrestlers. The Auggies' Cooper Willis, ranked second, earned a decision (8-5) over the Eagles' third-ranked Tate Flege to give Augsburg (Minn.) a 13-6 lead.
 
Sixth-ranked Seth Goetzinger of Augsburg (Minn.) earned a win by decision (5-1) over ninth-ranked Eddie Simes to give the Auggies a 16-6 advantage. Augsburg (Minn.) extended the lead to 19-6 at 184-pounds with fourth-ranked Brant Bombard earning a win by decision (6-2) over Leo Draveling.
 
UWL won the last two matches. Third-ranked Ben Kawczynski won by major decision (16-2) over second-ranked Parker Venz at 197-pounds to cut it to 19-10 and top-ranked Michael Douglas won by sudden victory (4-1) over Tyler Raway at 285-pounds to make the final score, 19-13.
 
UWL returns to action Friday, January 31 at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational at 11 a.m.
