UWL Falls to Fourth-Ranked Christopher Newport; Home Winning Streak Snapped at 16

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, receiving votes on the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Poll, fell 3-1 to fourth-ranked Christopher Newport University (Va.) Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles drop to 6-3 on the season while the Captains improve to 6-0-1. 

UWL saw its 16-game home streak snapped with Friday's loss. The Eagles' lost home loss came to MSOE (Wis.) by the score of 2-1 on September 26, 2021. UWL is 31-2-3 in its last 36 home games overall.

With the win, Christopher Newport (Va.) set an NCAA Division III record as it extended its unbeaten streak to 74 consecutive games. The Captains break the record of 73 held by Messiah College (Pa.). Christopher Newport's (Va.) last loss came to Johns Hopkins University (Md.) on November 17, 2019 by the score of 2-0 in the NCAA Division III Second Round. The Captains last regular season loss was to Salisbury University (Md.) on October 12, 2019 by the score of 5-2.

The Captains took a 1-0 lead on Friday at 18:42 on Hanna Heaton's goal off a free kick. UWL quickly tied the contest at 1-1 on Jillian Sawadski's goal off Aubree Caya's assist at 19:07. Just over a minute later, Christopher Newport (Va.) regained the lead as Emma Ricc scored at 20:19 off Katy Bronski's assist to make it 2-1.

Christopher Newport (Va.) recorded six shots and two corner kicks in the first half while UWL registered three shots. 

The game remained, 2-1, until Heaton notched her second goal at 74:32 to extend the Captains' lead to 3-1. 

UWL finished with nine shots, including two on goal. Alexis McMahon, Ellie Arndt and Addie Pauling each had two shots. The Eagles had five corner kicks, all coming in the second half. Sophia Anger suffered the loss, recording seven saves.

Christopher Newport (Va.) registered 14 shots with 10 on goal. Heaton totaled four shots, three on goal, with her two goals. Ricci finished with three shots, all coming on goal. The Captains had seven corner kicks. Jaya Daniel picked up the win in goal, recording one save. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, October 5 hosting UW-Oshkosh in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener at 5 p.m.
