Grand Rapids, Mich. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season with a 3-1 loss at Calvin University (Mich.) Friday night at Zuidema Field. The Eagles, ranked eighth on the United Soccer Coaches National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Poll, drops to 6-1 on the season. The Knights, ranked 22nd, improve to 3-2-1.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Calvin (Mich.) took a 1-0 lead at 12:11 on Olivia Rawls' goal with an assist from Elie Farrell. UWL tied the game at 17:08 with
Lindsey Szymanski scoring an unassisted goal.
The game remained tied, 1-1, at halftime.
UWL totaled nine shots in the opening 45:00 while Calvin (Mich.) finished with six. The Eagles had all four corner kicks in the first half.
Calvin (Mich.) took a 2-1 lead at 50:15 on a penalty kick goal from Mia Judd. UWL recorded 10 of the game's next 13 shots, including four in a span of 3:08, but could not get the game-tying goal. The Knights extended the lead to 3-1 at 87:36 as Vivian Nagelkirk scored off assists from Mikaela Waroway and Liz Williams.
UWL finished with 21 shots with six on goal.
Ellie Behnke,
Jillian Sawadski and
Ellie Arndt each had three shots while Szymanski,
Chelsea Gale,
Amaya Thesing and
Katelyn Studebaker finished with two. Sawadwski had a team-high two shots on goal.
Sophia Anger suffered the loss, registering one save. UWL had 10 corner kicks.
Calvin (Mich.) totaled 12 shots with four on goal. Williams had a team-high three shots. Kalex Dodge earned the win, finishing with four saves. The Knights also had one team save. Calvin (Mich.) registered two corner kicks.
UWL returns to action Sunday, September 22 at 20th-ranked North Central College (Ill.) at 12 p.m.
