Baseball Falls to UW-Whitewater in NCAA III Super Regional; Eagles Finish With Second Most Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a pair of games to UW-Whitewater in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) III Super Regional Saturday afternoon. 

THE BASICS
  • Result Game 1: UW-Whitewater 8, UW-La Crosse 0
  • Result Game 2: UW-Whitewater 8, UW-La Crosse 2
  • Location: Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium, Whitewater, Wis. 
  • Records: UW-La Crosse 36-16, UW-Whitewater 40-9
  • National Ranking: UW-Whitewater is ranked fifth and UW-La Crosse 15th on this weeks D3baseball.com Top-25 polls. 
  • 2024 Season: The Eagles 36 wins is the tied for second most in a single season. The Eagles were making their second consecutive trip to the NCAA III Super Regional and four time in school history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UW-Whitewater scored first as Eli Frank hit an RBI single to score Aaron Holland from second base. 
  • UWL would threaten in the second inning when Tim Urlaub singled with one out. Then with two outs, Nate Witte sent a fly ball to deep left center that saw the Warhawks catch the ball at the top of the fence to end the inning. 
  • The Warhawks then scored four runs on six hits in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Adam Cootway led off the inning with a solo home run while Andy Thies, Bennett Frazer and Holland each drove in a run for the Warhawks.
  • RBI singles by Dominik McVay and Holland put UW-Whitewater up 7-0 in the sixth inning while Sam Paden's sacrifice fly made it 8-0 in the seventh inning. 

    Game Two
  • The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Warhawks scored two runs on two hits. Eli Frank hit a two run home run to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead.
  • UW-Whitewater added two more runs in the fourth inning. Frazer drove a run in with a single while Frank hit a sacrifice to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • The Eagles would get on the board in the fifth inning as Anthony Vivian reached on an error, advanced to second on a Jack Olver's single and moved to third on a bunt single by Andrew Rajkovich. Urlaub then hit a sacrifice fly to score Vivian and cut the Eagles deficit to 4-1.
  • UW-Whitewater would get the run back in their half of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Holland. 
  • Chris VandenHeuvel would lead of the Eagles sixth inning with a double and move to third on a throwing error. Mac Born then grounded out which allowed VandenHeuvel to score and make it 5-2.
  • A three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning by Matt Scolan would but UW-Whitewater up 8-2. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • UWL finished game one with just three hits.
  • Urlaub led the Eagles offense going 2-for-3.
  • Owen Deprez (6-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven in 3.2 innings of work. 
  • UW-Whitewater finished with eight runs on 11 hits and four walks.
  • Cade Berendt (6-1) earned the complete game win as allowed three hits while striking out 13 in nine innings. 
  • Thies led the Warhawks offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while McVay was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. 
      Game Two
  • UWL finished game two with two runs, eight hits and one walk.
  • VandenHeuvel led the Eagles offensively going 3-for-4 with a run scored while Jack Olver was 2-for-4. 
  • Owen Anderson (4-2) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three. 
  • UW-Whitewater finished with eight runs, 13 hits and six walks.
  • Jack Hagen (9-0) earned the win for the Warhawks giving up two runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three in 9.0 innings. 
  • Holland led the offense for the Warhawks as he finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Scolan was 1-for-3 with two walks, three RBI and a run scored.
