UWL Defeats UW-Stout to Earn Win in Inaugural WIAC Game

Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team earned a 17-2 victory at UW-Stout on Wednesday night at Nelson Field in the Eagles' first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) game in school history. 

UWL improves to 7-2 overall while UW-Stout, also playing its inaugural league game, drops to 3-5. 

The Eagles raced out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and 12-1 at halftime. Ava Schiltz scored the first two goals of the game with Megan Maloney and Grace Willmott adding goals in the first period. UWL extended its lead to 8-0 with three goals from Grace Willmott and one from Kiersten Pelletier

UW-Stout cut it to 8-1, but goals from Britta Nelson, Megan Feeney, Schiltz and Maloney gave UWL a 12-1 halftime lead. 

After the Blue Devils cut it to 12-1, the Eagles scored the final five goals. Sydney Schmitz scored in the third quarter while Feeney tallied a pair of goals in the fourth quarter with Willmott and Nelson also notching goals. 

UWL totaled 34 shots with six players recording multiple goals. Willmott led the Eagles with four goals with Schiltz and Feeney each finishing with three. Maloney, Nelson and Pelletier had two goals. Pelletier had a team-high two assists. Schiltz and Lydia Spencer had three ground balls with Willmott recording five draw controls. 

Stefani Rossi recorded 11 saves in earning the win. 

UW-Stout had 18 shots in the game. Mai Nou Vang and Abigail Todey scored goals for the Blue Devils. Katt Squire and Megan Palmer each had three ground balls. Squire had eight saves. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 6 hosting Carroll University (Wis.) at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
