Baseball Wins Game 2 To Earn Split With UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team held on for the win in game two to earn a split with UW-Stevens Point for the second day in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UWL scored four runs in the first inning as they started with three straight singles by Nate Witte, Chris VandenHeuvel and Mac Born. Witte scored on Born's single while VandenHeuvel and Born both scored on a home run by George Seaman to give UWL the early 4-0 lead.
  • UW-Stevens Point would get three runs back in their half of the first inning including two runs on a single by Logan Homolka which made it 4-3.
  • The Pointers took a 7-4 lead in the second inning as they scored four runs on two hits and three errors. 
  • With one out in the third inning, Born singled advanced to third on a double by Jack Olver and then scored on a Anthony Vivian single. 
  • An RBI single By Tim Urlaub in the fourth inning cut the Eaglers deficit to 7-6. 
  • UWL would regain the lead in the fifth inning as they scored six runs on five hits and two . Urlaub provided the big hit as he hit a grand slam that game UWL an 11-7 lead. Witte would also drive in a run with a double that scored Jack Moran to make it 12-7 Eagles.
  • The Pointers cut their deficit to 12-10 with three runs including two of them coming from Anthony Tomczak's home run to make it 12-10.
  • An RBI double by Nick Argersinger pull UW-Stevens Point closer as they still trailed 12-11. Four more runs in the seventh inning including two runs scoring off a single by Homolka gave the Pointers a 15-12 lead. 
  • UW-Stevens Point added two more runs in the eighth inning  as Tyler Soule hit a two run to make it 17-12.
  • An RBI single by VandenHeuvel and Olver pulled the Eagles to within 17-14 but that would be all they would get in their last at-bat. 
    Game Two
  • The Eagles scored three runs over the first two innings as the game entered the fourth inning with UWL leading 2-0. Witte led of the game by being hit by a pitch and would then score on a double by Vivian. It was VandenHeuvel who drove in both runs in the second inning with a two out single that scored both Calvin Hargrove and Logan Pye
  • UW-Stevens Point would take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored four runs on five hits. Colton Martell drove in two of the runs with a single while Connor Olson's single scored another run.
  • UWL scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-4 lead. Mac Born's 2-run home run in the fifth inning game UWL a 5-4 lead while Witte's 2-run home run made it 7-4. 
  • A Martell solo home run in the bottom of the sixth would cut the Pointers deficit to 7-5.
  • In the seventh inning, Vivian doubled and advanced to third on a Seaman single. Vivian then scored on a out ground out by Hargrove to give UWL an 8-5 lead. 
  • UW-Stevens Point would make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth as Martell led off the inning with his second home run of the game to make it 8-6. Then with two outs, Tomczak walked and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Comer then singeld to score Tomczak to pull UW-Stevens Point to within 8-7. After a walk, UWL relief pitch Owen Deprez got the final out with a popp out to end the game. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 14 runs on 19 hits.
  • Seaman finished 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Born also had four hits with an RBI and two runs scored while VandenHeuvel and Olver each had three hits.
  • Nate Melnikoff (1-1) came on in relief and suffered the loss by giving up four runs on two hits and three walks. 
  • The Pointers scored 17 runs on 16 hits and 12 walks.
  • Comer led the Pointers with four hits while Tomczak and Homolka each had three hits.
  • Joe Schneider (2-0) earned the win on the mound as he pitched 1.0 inning of relief and struck out one. 
      Game Two
  • The Eagles finished game two with eight runs on 16 hits.
  • Born led the Eagles offense going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Witte finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored while Vivian was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Alex Redman (2-2) earned his second win of the season by allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two in 6.0 innings. Owen Deprez (2) picthed the final three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four to earn the save. 
  • Casey Pickering (5-2) suffered the loss for the Pointers as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work. 
  • Martell led the Pointers offense going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored.
