Baseball Drops a Pair of WIAC Games to Nationally Ranked UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a pair Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games Sunday afternoon to nationally ranked UW-Whitewater.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UW-Whitewater would score a run in the first inning when Eli Frank reached on a throwing error that allowed Matt Scolan to score from first base.
  • The Eagles would score five runs on six hits in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. With one out, Chris VandenHeuvel singled and advanced to third on a single by Mac Born. Jack Olver then singled to load the bases before a double by George Seaman drove in three runs. Then with two outs, Logan Pye doubled to score Seaman while Tim Urlaub singled to score Pye. 
  • UW-Whitewater would cut their deficit to 5-3 as Sam Paden reached on a bases loaded fielders choice to score run while Andy Thies drove in a run with a single.
  • The Warhawks then made it 5-4 on McVay's solo home run.
  • UWL would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth inning as Moran led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Witte. VandenHeuvel then singled to score Moran.
  • UW-Whitewater would retake the lead in the fifth inning as they scored five runs on two hits and an error. McVay once again provided the big hit as he hit his second home run of the game, a grand slam, to give the Warhawks a 9-6 lead. They would then add another run in the sixth inning on a run scoring double by Andy Thies.
  • With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Anthony Vivian singled and advanced to second when Pye reached on a fielding error. Urlaub then singled to score Vivian to cut the Eagles deficit to 10-7. 
  • Nate Witte would lead off the ninth inning with a double but UWL would not be able to get another hit in the inning. 
    Game Two
  • The Warhawks scored first in game two as they scored four runs on four hits and an error. With one out, Scolan hit a solo home run for the first run. Then after a walk and an error, singles by Thies and McVay scored a run to make it 4-0 UW-Whitewater.
  • The Eagles would get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as Vivian hit his sixth home run of the game as UWL trailed 4-1.
  • Scolan led off the top of the fifth inning with his second home run of the game to make it 5-1. Eli Frank then walked and advanced to second when Sam Paden reached on a fielders choice and a throwing error. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt would allow Frank to score. After a line out, a sacrifice bunt by Austin Wesse allowed Paden to score. McVay then reached on a fielders choice which allowed Hopper to score and make it 8-1.
  • The Warhawks would add two more runs in the sixth inning with RBI singles from Hopper and Thies to extend their lead to 10-1.
  • UWL would get one final run in the ninth inning as VandenHeuvel led off with a single and advanced to third on Born's single. With one out, Seaman would then single to score VandenHeuvel.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with seven runs on 13 hits and two walks. 
  • VandenHeuvel led the Eagle offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Urlaub finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Seaman was 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs. 
  • Alex Redman (1-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles by allowing nine runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work.
  • Cade Hansen (2-0) came on in relief to earn the win as he allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in 6.2 innings of work. Danny Hopper (2) earned the save for the Warhawks pitching the final 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit.
  • As a team, the Warhawks scored 10 runs on 13 hits and two walks .
  • Thies finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while McVay went 2-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored.
      Game Two
  • The Eagles finished game two with two runs on five hits.
  • VandenHeuvel led the Eagles in game two going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
  • Vivian finished 1-for-4 with a home run. 
  • Owen Anderson (3-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed 10 runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out three. 
  • Michael Hiker Jr. earned the win for the Warhawks going 7.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out 10.
  • UW-Whitewater had five players finish with at least two hits including Scolan who finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
